Anyways, that was 2014. To get us ready for the new year, here's the finale from Starting Here, Starting Now.
"Song of Me/Today is the First Day of the Rest of My Life/A New Life Coming" just seems like the appropriate song for New Years.
I’ve had this post queued up since March.
Feeling like a total piece of sh*t tonight which, since I lack the ability to deal with my issues like a normal person, involves me listening to this song a bunch of times.
Personally, I feel like Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire just…get it, more than other songwriters do. Stephen Sondheim can write beautiful and complex shows, Rodgers and Hammerstein can write grandiose scores, but Maltby and Shire are the ones you can relate to. Their songs often have simple, even pedestrian roots, but they bring out the best of simple everyday folk. Pity none of their shows were ever that successful. In fact, this relatively unsuccessful music revue was composed of songs from their relatively unsuccessful flops. I’m glad this is a thing, because they wrote some really great songs. This album makes a really good listening experience. It’s actually the reason I got an iTunes account. Just to buy this album. Worth it. This number in particular is a delight.
