I think that... beron would simply have not had a child with his mate. The chances of that child surpassing him in power one day are too great. (LoA was chosen so that the kids aren't too weak by his standards) The social standing of said mate could also be probably an issue for him so I think it's entirely possible that he has a mate hidden away who is made to drink contraceptive tea whether she wants it or not.

i cannot even begin to explain how much i love this headcanon. it’s just so fitting, too. i’ve always wondered like — if finding a mate is always a possibility, even if it’s Rare and Special, how does any fae make the decision to settle down and marry someone who isn’t their mate? when do they stop looking? when do they stop waiting? what if their mate just … isn’t even born yet? let alone for high lords! like what if a high lord got married to someone who wasn’t his mate, established her as lady of his court, enmeshed her in all of his politics and had children with her, had an heir with her, and then — the mating bond snaps into place with someone else decades or even centuries later? what the fuck does he do at that point? keep a mate and a wife? get rid of the wife? reject the mate? why would any high lord risk that????

so for beron to actually know who his mate is already! to either not want to court the risk of having his most powerful heir! or to just not think she is a suitable enough match for him! to choose to marry loa instead because she is powerful and will beget powerful children but never any beyond him! to not be able to reject his mate because she is tied to his ribs and he cannot bring himself to unknot her, but to not want her anywhere near his court! i love that so much.

it also tracks with the violence he enacts on his family in canon. he resents them all!!! and it would explain why no matter what eris does as heir, no matter how he proves himself, no matter how flawless his mask and how difficult it is to tell where it ends and he begins, he is never good enough for beron. because beron “““knows””” that his true heir is unborn. or it’s the same way loa feels about eris — the wrong son born of the wrong person. he would be getting double whammied. ohhhh this is so crunchy thank you for sharing it with me
