I had a to of fun at the museum of pop culture, the exhibits their are awesome.

tbh I wasn’t super interested in the pop culture museum when my friend mentioned it, but I’ve had so many people recommend it I guess I better check it out!

in the past I've really enjoyed Elliott Bay Books, Serious Pie for pizza, B.Fuller's Mortar & Pestle (like an apothecary for tea), the pop culture museum is v cool, and the ferries to hiking around the sound are gorgeous on good-weather days :)

omg pls talk at me re: your translation as failure feelings bc I got so excited reading your rant!! I did linguistics and French in school & there's this poem Il pleut by Jacques Prevert that reminds me of exactly what you're talking about bc it references the pronoun "il" as being both indirect and gendered and then asks why "elle" isn't the same and just!! Nothing like that in English! Translation is something I want to do in future so thanks for making my night/giving me feelings abt language

I LOVE talking about translation! And that poem sounds like a fantastic example of a translating problem--which, okay, translating problems are the best, because they require this awesome nerdy balancing act between research and instinct. How are you gonna negotiate and compensate for this knot you can’t unravel? Are you gonna snip the problematic thread out? Cover it up with a patch? Or stitch some petals around the knot and make it the center of a little embroidered flower? The problems are the fun stuff, even as they’re also the hard stuff. I’m glad you’re excited, and good luck with il pleut, or whatever you decide to work on in the future! :)

How did you start cultivating an interest in perfume? I'm very much a beginner and I love the way you write about scents, but I don't really think I have the nose for it. Is that just something that comes with practice?

Hey! Good question, and yes you absolutely DO have the nose for it - getting into perfume is less a nose practice thing, and more a language practice thing the way i think about it. I’ll explain:

So, I was never *into* perfume growing up - no one in my family wore scent, and the only experiences of bottle perfume I had were not promising (the only bottle I had access to seemed unpleasant me). HOWEVER, I did love to smell all sort of things that I didn’t associate with perfume, like some fresh flowers, or beeswax candles, or laundry, or incense, or garden herbs, or cedar boxes etc. So, it was really just finding perfumes that had things about them I actually liked smelling - but more than that, it was being able to identify things i liked:  it was difficult to identify WHAT i liked until i could CATEGORISE what I was actually literally smelling in the moment. I needed the words to understand what was happening between my face and my brain, otherwise I was just stuck with ‘uhhh it’s smells nice I guess, idk why?’

The comparison I guess I’m trying to make is say for instance music - if you’re a hearing individual, you know what a piano sounds like, right? You know that because at some point as a child you heard a piano, and someone showed you a picture of a large wooden object with keys and said PIANO at you, or maybe you were lucky enough to have someone play one in front of you, and your brain linked the sound with the word and concept ‘piano’. That way when you hear a saxophone, you may not know what it it yet, but you know it’s NOT a piano. After that you replaced the concept and word ‘not-piano thing’ with the word ‘saxophone’ and you can identify two things with perfect clarity, whereas before you might only have been able to say ‘uhhh i’m hearing musical sounds, i guess??’. It’s EXACTLY the same with perfume. If you start to identify and name notes, you can better describe, and remember, and identify all the things that you’re smelling. For instance you probably have smelled a rose before - if you smell a bottle of something and it smells the same as that memory, you can say ‘ooh that’s kind of like a rose, I’m smelling rose!’. So what do you do to increase your vocabulary? SMELL ALL THE FLOWERS. I don’t mean perfumes I mean go smell actual live flowers when you can get them, and then you’ll have ‘oh THAT’s a hyacinth!’ and ‘oh THAT’s an iris’ moments in your brain to remember and give your brain the handle it needs when it smells a perfume to help you go ‘waaaaait a minute there’s some jasmine in background there isn’t there!’. Without the word ‘jasmine’ in your brain associated with the smell of jasmine, you’re stuck with ‘ehhhhh flowers idk??’. So get smelling!

Flowers is just an example - this obviously this goes for everything! I love to know what woods smell like - so wooden furniture can help you with identifying cedars, and pines, and sometimes sandalwoods too. Leather is a great one i also love - any big department store (or relives cupboards) has leather bags and gloves to open and inhale. Then there’s all the edible things like spices (cinnamon! cardamom! black pepper! star anise! the average spice rack has a world or treats), and vanillas, sugary caramels, apples, mangoes, all the citrus fruits especially - lots of kitchen smells end up in perfume too. Get smelling and name things in your mind - you make your own brain’s dictionary of smells. The more things you can name, the more you can pick out from a bottle when you smell it again.

Lastly: read what other people write when THEY smell perfumes that you know of and can smell, they can help you identify when you’re smelling too. Sites like Fragrantica.com or Basenotes.com both have good lists of ‘official’ notes per scent, and are great places to read people’s reactions to specific perfumes. A lot of people very helpfully list off what they can smell in the feedback - it’s very subjective! So it can be fun to smell something yourself, take a sample paper strip home from a shop, read other people’s feedback and ask yourself ‘hmm they say they can smell leather in this, I wonder if I also smell leather when I try it?’ and smell it again.

So yes, you likely have all the skills you need right now - all you need to do is pay attention and give your brain what it needs to pick instruments out of the noise.

Whatever floats your boat - perfume should make you happy and make you feel good - so whatever does that for you.
