THE NIGHT IS STILL YOUNG
After weeks of biting our tongue, we can finally shout from the rooftops that we were the UK production designers for the new Nicki Minaj music video - The Night is Still Young. It was one of the most intense, surreal and incredibly fun 72 hours of our working career so far! But what an amazing opportunity to work with an incredible team. Thanks to everyone who dropped everything last minute to come and be part of our art department, we couldn’t have done it without you.
So here’s some shots from behind the scenes of the set we designed and built.
In celebration ‘we gon' get wild and crazy!’

LORD WHITNEY: Guest talk.
"Connoisseurs of make-believe”
Who are Lord Whitney? - Amy and Becky both went to Leeds Metropolitan University, one based in graphic design and the other based in Photography. In third year they were told by a tutor that it would be good for them to meet as their style was very similar. After graduating university, by putting their different strengths together they decided to collaborate and create with other creators as a collective, however they realised that they worked better as a pair and so Lord Whitney, named after both of their surnames, was formed.
What work do they create? -Their work and style is hugely influenced by The Mighty Boosh. They create 3D sets, garments, etc. Despite the outcomes being made out of found objects, they have a very high-fashion appearance. Their style is becoming more and more recognised and so they have worked with high-end fashion brands such as Missoni, Cartier and collectives such as Container Plus.

WORKSHOP***
LORD WHITNEY - 10/03/15
To begin Unit X, we have been given the opportunities to attend Lectures and Workshops by Designers and Collectives in the industry, in order to inspire us and broaden our own ideas.
After attending Eike Konig’s lecture on his life as a designer and the development of Hort, I felt incredibly motivated to explore areas and avenues which I had not considered beforehand. Focussing on simple, typical, Graphic Design techniques - typography, etc. just doesn’t inspire me in the way in which less generic platforms do. Being told IT IS OKAY, to not be a typical Graphic Designer, and that it is, in fact, the differences that make a successful designer, has made me a lot more comfortable in my own work.
Following this, meeting Amy Lord and Rebecca Whitney, after they attempted to work in creative fields for companies, and hearing their success story of Lord Whitney, a much less conventional design collective outside of the typical design world, I am now feeling a whole lot more comfortable about not being as similar to those in the year group who are typical Graphic Designers.
As you will see from the images I have posted, labelled under #unitxlordwhitney, the girls challenged us to ‘play and create’ something which we would not usually. Being given the brief of creating a narrative from one object and two words was always going to result in something unusual and arguably crazy.
In a group of 8, we were given the object: ‘crab’, and the words, ‘flying’ and ‘travelling’. Immediately, we knew that in this scenario, we could work literally, as we were told to ‘play and have fun’. Following this, we chose to send the crab on holiday. Going off to Magaluf, The Great Barrier-reef and the Arctic, we made the little crab some accompaniments: a rucksack, (10) gloves, a hat, a passport, a condom (you know what happens in Magaluf) and a little set to enhance our crab costume we dressed Tash in. It’s fair to say that we threw our hearts into this, making pom-poms (thanks to Beth’s amazing little pom pom makers... I’m definitely purchasing some) and painting cardboard, feeling like a glorified play school group.... We had unbelievable fun!
LORD WHITNEY - 10/03/15
"Connoisseurs of Make-Believe."
So are you an upper class gentleman?
Not quite, Lord Whitney is a collaboration between Amy Lord and Rebekah Whitney, but we do prance around in a top hat occasionally.
I don’t understand; what do you actually do?
We work with our clients to come up with and develop visual ideas and concepts for projects; we then design and make them. This can be set design, installations, costume design, props styling or anything in between, as long as the results are original and exciting.
What kind of projects do you work on?
From editorials and photo shoots to music videos and interiors, we’ve put our creative stamp on a huge variety of weird and wonderful projects.
Where do you build all this stuff?
Our studio is in an old mill in Leeds, where we have the space to create beyond our wildest dreams. We then either transport our sets and props to location or shoot them in our in house photo studio.
Who are your clients?
Our clients can vary from small independents to global brands and events. Recently we have worked for Missoni, Hunger Magazine, Transport for London, Tate Liverpool, London Collections, Glastonbury Festival, The Princes Trust, Computer Arts Magazine and YCN Agency.
"The Adventures Of Mr Paintbrush - Do It In Denim". Lord Whitney Stop Motion project for my course. We worked in groups over the course of 2 days to make props which we then filmed and edited into a stop motion movie.
