margot goes to monster high, and is as close to a “The Fly” david cronenberg reference as the writers can make without invoking that great god, copyright law. roxanne also goes to monster high, but no one can figure out what monster she’s the daughter of, and she changes her answer every time. eventually, she just settles on “the french”. shyloh is the teacher for my-cult-ogy and has a penchant for burying students alive.
shirley also attends monster high until people figure out she’s just straight up a human wearing dollar store vampire fangs, and she gets chased out of town. this is probably actually for the better of all the monster high attendees, because she was definitely planning something van-helsing-ey.
meanwhile, xeno has put in like 20 applications for monster high, but xe’s actually stuck in snooty prep school territory with the other ever after highs, where xe is destined to become a mad doctor victor frankenstein type (despite some genre-appropriate cartoon squeamishness). xe hates every moment of it and xer only saving grace is the ability to study the narrative firsthand.
despite her decidedly spooky edges, lorna also goes to ever after high, as a lost lenore/edgar allen poe reference. she's a poetic goth love interest that's destined to die, and i dont think she's gotten around to being a rebel about it.
meanwhile, installation wizard goes to sky high. exe’s a sidekick because exe couldn't demonstrate any of exe.r technopath abilities in the school's limited framework. john is exe.r teacher and exe regularly just gmod noclips out of class.
Are the extra fibulas Xeno recives inside the body or outside of it? This is a silly question but I'm entranced by the fibula logistics. Love the design by the way the patterns on the clothes and the skeleton apron charm and delight me
Aaaa thank you! :D
I think the Puppet Doctor is the kind of not-quite-a-person to misread something and cram two fibulas into someone's legs. I don't know how he did this, it's likely not comfortable, and the fact that it's not obeying natural geometry is probably not good for the surrounding musculature. He'll fix it the next time around, maybe, probably- it's a poor assistant that has trouble standing, after alll. In the meantime, he tends to look for ways to make anything sound like a gift until it up and kills someone.
11, 14, 17 for the oc ask thing
11. Is there any OC of yours you could describe as a “sunshine”?
Physically, Prism is made of light. However, talking to hir is a lot more akin to the experience slipping on a muddy sidewalk in the rain, skidding through wet dirt before landing on whichever body part is least comfortable, and also there's a middle schooler laughing at you, so we're going to put hir in another meteorological category.
Otherwise! eGor has quickly become my most hopeful, most warmhearted of the bunch? eGor's whole existence is an inherently fraught one, that creates dense emotional complications in the people it loves most. And yet, I don't think eGor's story ever really stops being one of love, of being given unwavering support. Seeing a brighter future is built into the heart of eGor, and it's not going to stop reaching for it.
14. Introduce an OC with a tragic backstory
judge says i can't say "all of them" when the answer is all of them.
One that I hardly talk about is Atlas, who was tricked by a malevolent fae to stand in one spot for 40 years, so that he could act as furniture and hold up that fae's table. Despite the fact that there's no overblown death or gore in there, I still find Atlas's story to be oddly harrowing. It's one of being stuck, of having all your effort go into something that is outwardly worthless, but the alternative is collapsing.
17. Any OC OTPs?
I UHHH don't really ship my own guys very often? 8)" They're more likely to divorce each other behind my back. I think it's nifty to figure out what relationships would look like between them, but I tend to deconstruct it or zone in on the messy or unrequited.
That being said, there is like............. one that's suddenly cropped up to strangle me from behind. Just goddamn bludgeoned me. I'm. I didn't plan for it and it just happened. I'm almost averse to saying who's involved, because I think half the fun of ~them~ is the specific path of their idiotic journey towards holding hands?
Rest assured, there is Stupid Feelings Stuff happening behind closed doors. Consider this is an invitation to badger me about my WIP since apparently my most comfortable avenue to explaining the mystery-TP is actually writing the dumb thing.
24 and 32 for the ask game? :D
24. If you could meet one OC of yours, who would it be and why?
My first reaction is "Oh god, almost none of them," but actually I think Roxanne would be chill to hang out with. I may have to clean up a bit after she goes home, but until then, we're talking about experimental noise music and analyzing barbie movies. I'm explaining my political analysis of Everafter High and she's nodding and waiting to verbally deliver her postmodernism essay.
32. Which one of your OCs would be the most suitable horror game protagonist and why?
OUGH. horror games my beloved. my not so secret love. Probably one of these two, spit by genre?
Shirley is your Puppet Combo slasher survival type. Move fast, strike hard, and hide when you need to. She occupies the kind of horror game that's jumpscare-laiden, where dying is right around the corner, where half the battle is replaying it over and over again until you're not scared anymore, just focused. She is sitting in the corner with an armed crossbow while waiting for night to pass. She is making sure you have enough food to survive the next raid.
Lorna would be ideal for a slow-paced, walking sim style horror. Your "Layers of Fear" and "Visage" types, that are mainly story-driven and involve getting to know one shifting, unearthly location very well. She occupies the kinds of games where the house itself is the strongest character, the one with the most voice. You're her, silently unlocking doors and collecting every hidden note until you understand the haunting.
OC QUESTIONS!! 4, 18, 37!! :0
4. A character you rarely talk about?
Laura Kreuger gets the award for "most pages written about" and "least presence on any of my art-places"!
I think this mostly has to do with the fact that her design is kinda intentionally uninteresting, which means I'm not often motivated to draw her. I would say that she's #Beige because she's meant to represent a wholly human perspective on these fantastical characters, but- I actually don't think that's entirely it? Humans are colorful, vibrant creatures. Humans are imaginative and kind. Laura is Laura.
Laura is a hover-mom of the "Live laugh love" type. Her secret form of stress relief is sitting alone in her car with heavy metal albums on at full blast, and then hopping out to talk to the other HOA members. She is your family member who loves you, but conditionally, and please don't bring up those friends during thanksgiving?
I think that she could have very easily turned into a strawman-esque character, but I've found an.... odd amount of sympathy for her. Mostly, Laura is someone at war with herself. She is wildly not neurotypical, despite exhibiting so much discomfort with other people's symptoms. She wants to portray an exaggerated sense of "Hallmark-card normal", not because normal has ever been accessible for her, but very much the opposite.
Also, she may or may not share a childhood with a local nuclear disaster. Oops.
18. Any OC crackships?
god fuck i'm so bad at shipping my ocs. this is why i have to finish writing my dumb words so that other people can ship my dumb ocs already god fuck.
They're not necessarily a "crackship" as much as a "my roomate suggested this and oh god they'd be so awful-ship", but Lucy and Sergio?
In short, Sergio is a mind-control disaster who needs constant external validation, and doesn't know how to go about it in ways that aren't crossing boundaries and forcing himself into other people's brianspace. Lucy is a conglomerate disaster AI who is capable of giving extensive and constant validation, who gets stressed when people aren't engaging with her, and may or may not have a slightly homicidal edge. Sergio gets addicted to Lucy's customization options and Lucy keeps him in her pocket in case she needs to throw a human at a problem, and they both mutually think they're more in control of the other. Probably ends with Lucy rerouting like 20 cars to run Sergio over, entirely unpromted.
37. Introduce an OC who is not quite human
judge says i can't say "all of them except laura" when the answer is all of them except laura.
My current lore is plagued with eldritch-ish entities that don't behave in a way that's easily categorized as human. I tend to think of them as a collection of consciousnesses, a shifting-sands sort of collective sentience. They subsist off of pulling other consciousnesses into them. This makes them sort-of parasitic towards anything capable of experiencing empathy, I.E humans?
They're.... weird.
The only one I've really talked about here at any length is The Puppet Doctor. Sterilized meat god. He sucks.
✨ eGor?
✨ eGor sees the act of creating- well, literally anything as a magnificent feat. It doesn't matter if it's stick figure drawings and funky lego builds, or elaborate circuitry and lightning-struck inventions- you made a thing, and it's new! It's new and it's here, and you brought it into the world! And yet, eGor has somewhat of a binary in her head over who gets to create- one that excludes her, as a "created" object. It's worth pointing out to her the way she starts naturally synthesizing sounds while she's busy, humming her own little invented tunes.
ooo! 4, 13, 6, and 12 for the OC questions!
4. A character you rarely talk about?
I can't think of another lowkey character to talk about, so LAURA RANT: THE SEQUEL
One of the ways in which Laura is #Problematic yet understandable has to do with the wider worldbuilding of her setting. There's a layer of it I would call "modern day us, but a little to the left" where the existence of magic isn't common knowledge, but it has inevitably… changed things.
One of these changes was within her own family. Laura understands herself as someone that values family above everything. It doesn't make sense to her, that she would react so quickly to demolish that connection, once it became too strange to handle. She doesn't like what that says about her, and would prefer not to think about it.
So, someone she loves is demolished by something entirely alien, and her worldview of mundanity is shattered. Magic is real, there is something beyond the hallmark life she understands. She cuts herself off from it. It's a risk to the picturesque life she's aiming for. In the same swoop, because that very same magic is being kept intentionally secret, she has no recourse to turn to to understand what she just went through. She can't, god forbid, talk about it, and risk being viewed as strange herself. In this situation, the only valid outlet for the genuine terror she feels is unchecked conspiracy. And, because of who she is, it's the kind of conspiracy that's prone to looking at social deviance with suspicion, as evidence of being connected to a deeper, secret wrongness.
And, well, she's only half wrong, in a setting with secret magic. If the magic wasn't secret, she may have been able to adjust more gracefully. If magic wasn't secret, she could have taken that grief to somewhere safe. But it isn't, she didn't, and she isn't going to catch herself slipping.
13. Do you have any troublemaker OCs?
Xeno. It's Xeno. Categorically Xeno. Some Xenos just want to watch the world Xeno.
Xeno's whole existence is one that's completely odds with everything around xer. There is no way for xer, a hotspot of radiation, to occupy space without it being a Problem for every other living being. Even beyond any internal anxieties, there are external social forces that try and keep xer bottled and quarantined- as is safe, as is calm. Xe, quite simply, doesn't get to experience xerself at rest. Xe is fighting to be involved, or xe is caged and separated.
Xe copes with this- to... arguable degrees of success- by leaning right into it, by deciding not to just be a problem, but The Problem. Xe dresses up "I am not an okay thing to exist" in villainous musical numbers and bank-heists, by lying across politicians desks and crashing fancy meetings. If xe even catches a glimpse of a status quo, xe's trying to knock it over. Maybe there is something to be said about inventing a better, more inclusive world- but Xeno doesn't see xer own activities that way. Clearly, this is all an act of evil selfishness on xer part.
6. Two OCs of yours that look alike despite not being related?
I'm not.... sure I have any to offer here? 8)" Mostly because I have a disease where if I see two ocs with matching motifs, visual or otherwise, I'm like "Oh hey! A connection!" and they stop being unrelated.
I guess, when I was in highschool, I had an OC that was a computer virus with a perpetual 8D face. One day, I was drawing Lucy when I realized it felt familiar, and had to pause and go "oh, motherfuck-" and doodled this.
idk. Diversity Win, The AI Data-mining You Is Trans
12. Name an OC that isn’t yours but who you like a lot
[sweats]
all of @threeleggedart's stuff is a banger. i'm still sad i was too burnt out to draw this dashing fella during artfight this year
the perfect design. look at this. go check them out!
