No the big takeaway part of “Back to The Future” is not that the mom wanted to get with her son (unknowingly and doesn’t happen) or even that the kid goes back in time.
It’s that Marty had to meet and witness his parents when they where young. He had to watch his father be bullied as a teen by the same bully he has as an adult. Except this time Marty now sees why his dad accepts the torment. George is use to it. biff has been doing this for years. Marty has to see the bullying and know his dad won’t escape it. Then Marty befriends his dad and realizes something. That of course this is his dad. I’m talking about the “couldn’t handle that kind of rejection” parallel. Marty has to see and learn that his fear of rejection was something passed down to him like a curse in a Ancient Greek tragedy. He then see his dad as a teen as it becomes obvious to him how this high schooler became the man he knows as his dad. And how having this man as a dad affects him.
Then there’s Marty’s mom Lorraine. Less obvious as most people focus on the jokes of her being attracted to her son. I’ll ignore those. Marty meets his mom as a teen and realizes that no wonder she becomes an alcoholic that feels stuck in life. She was a teen who drank a lot (I’m referencing the scene where Marty sees his mom drink in the car and learns how irresponsible she was). She was someone that had fantasies of a happy life (what I pick up from the movie), by showing her romanticizing “Kal” expecting it to be like a movie romance. Not saying she didn’t love George or was wrong for being a teenager who wanted to be happy. I’m focusing on it because that lead her to be serverly disappointed with her life when she ends up with an average one as an adult. The drinking is the main thing that Marty picks up on when he learns that his mom is a lying hypocrite about her teenage year and no wonder she became the alcoholic mom we see is she started young. He thinks about how having an alcoholic dissatisfied mom affects him.
I might be going too deep here and looking too far into things. But Marty going to the past and getting an in depth look on his parents youth, then thinking about how what his life was like (in the beginning at least) steams of course from teenage bullying to being taken advantage of as an adult with a fear of rejection; underage drinking and having teenage dreams turning into alcoholism and dissatisfaction with life; and how those where the conditions he was raised with (and his siblings) creating his fear of rejection, him learning to just let biff be a bully to his dad, because he’s never seens his dad stand up for himself, and just waiting for tense family interactions (Mcfly family dinner) to be over as he just observers his mom drowning her feelings of disappointment.
I love the idea of dealing with family tension and the whole thing withe the conditions your parents grew up in affecting the conditions they raise you in being shown by meeting you parents as teens via time travel. Very sci-fi and should be done more me thinks.
