By the fifth episode of Adventure Time’s newest season, I was captivated by the sheer number of myth and fairy tale tropes/motifs intertwined with Huntress Wizard’s character arc. Adventure Time has always excelled at using these traditional and recognizable motifs, but this is by far the best they have ever executed it.

Also, while I initially thought Finn’s story to be Sleeping Beauty, due to a lack of consistency with the traditional fairy tale, and it seemingly pulling from all over the Grimm Fairy Tales (such as Snow White and True Bride), I decided to only cover the True Love’s Kiss part of those fairy tales. I might do another article covering the similarities and differences in the future.

While returning from a reconnaissance mission to a nearby planet which appears to be capable of sustaining life, an Eagle team pass out and the ship is brought back under remote control. Upon arrival a passenger is found aboard the Eagle, who appears to be Dr. Helena Russell's husband, long presumed dead after a failed mission to Jupiter five years prior. The Moon Base Alpha crew must determine how this seemingly impossible situation occurred, all the while slowly drifting out of range of the planet which has offered the promise of a new home. Koenig must decide whether to go ahead with the evacuation to the planet before time runs out, but questions remain about the true nature of Dr. Russell's "late" husband, and whether the planet is truly safe.

*According to a making of documentary, when filming on the Planet Terra Nova set, they had parrots, one of which had learned the word "CUT". He would call this out just after the director Charles Crichton would yell "action". The parrot was replaced.

Steven Knight only recently joined Disney Ridley's new Star Wars movie.

We’ve been working on that [film] for a few years and all of that feeds in to our overall storytelling. So we’ve just got to a point now where we’ve got a wonderful writer in Steven Knight, he’s come on board and we’re going to see a script probably in the next month and a half that we’ve been working on for quite a while. Just imaging all that concept art that’s floating around at LF just waiting for us! Ahhhhhhhhh I wanna look SOOOOOOOOO BAAAAAAAAAD! 😫 So Steven Knight will be crafting a script from existing story ideas. Who has been sheparding this movie for the past two years(what Rick Carter type person…or was it Damon Lindelof)?! Rian Johnson’s TLJ took Star Wars to a new place with Rey and Ben.

The Dyad…two that are one…mythical marriage(married in the force)! I really hope Rey is featured heavily in this new film because I love her and I don’t feel like TROS showed her the love she deserved. I hope they are bringing her back for the right reason…LOVE is the ultimate message of Star Wars from George Lucas. What is LOVE to Rey…Ben was her LOVE and NOT as a force ghost…I want him ALIVE!!! This movie can be ALL NEW characters as long as they do right by my girl! May the Force Be With Us!

No matter what happened to Reylo, reading and theorising with the help of your writing has helped me improve my own reading of books through the exploration of the myth and folklore! As far as sources go, the best ones that I found in my research were:

In Search of the Swan Maiden: A Narrative on Folklore and Gender by Barbara Fass Leavy - the whole book is great and important for context, but the relevant section is Chapter 4: The Animal Groom. If you can’t find a hard copy, most of it is on Google Books.

Sur La Lune Fairy Tales - both the site and the books they publish are incredibly helpful and comprehensive. For the study of ATU 425, you might try their Beauty and the Beast Tales From Around the World, or just peruse the different tales on their website: http://surlalunefairytales.blogspot.com/2013/10/tale-typing-beauty-and-beast-and-other.html

There are also a number of folklorist blogs, both professional and amateur, which you might reference to see what speaks to you. That said, it’s important to remember that the popular folktale classification system is very Western and Euro-centric, and depending on what you’re analyzing, it’s important to seek out sources that will give alternate cultural perspectives, especially African and Asian folklore.

Outside of these sources, a lot of the conclusions I came to were just the result of reading a lot of different folktales and noticing the patterns. That’s not to say these thoughts are in any way original since I’m sure there are a lot of highly educated folklorists who figured this stuff out a long time ago! But the point is that once you start looking, the motifs will stand out to you and then you will see them everywhere! Enjoy and please tag me when your meta is done; I’d love to read it!
