So there was this notebook I bought at a Barnes & Noble. Its cover was printed to look like this Japanese woodblock print, which looked really cool on a small notebook, and I was going to use it to write lyrics (because I kind of needed some lyric-writing inspiration). But I went on a trip to see the University of Vermont this weekend, and I guess I left it in my hotel room, because it didn't make it in my suitcase when I got home. Seeing as it was supposed to be a songwriting notebook (though I only wrote one song in it, thank God), I decided to write some lyrics in its memory. I wrote these in like five minutes maybe, so they're not perfect, though nothing ever really is.
I guess I was careless, leaving
On my way out the door
I didn't notice you sitting
Alone on the hotel floor
There wasn't much in you, I'm sad to say
But so much potential was lost that day
The day when I threw your space away forevermore
The waves on your cover inspired me to write
And I envisioned being with you all the night
But that all ended, I presume
When I left that hotel room
And I guess it's safe to assume
That it wasn't right
[chorus]
If you say I lost much you're wrong
A couple blank pages and an unfinished song
But the potential I discovered
Between your Japanese covers
It's safe to say is all gone
[/chorus]
(an instrumental bit goes here I think)
And your ghost will always haunt
That one corner of Vermont
And your memory will taunt my dreams
I was careless, I was cruel,
I was pretty much a fool,
But our friendship's been torn through the seams
(chorus here again, maybe two times?)
