Part One
The SGC infirmary was quiet.
Janet Fraiser sat in her office going over her paperwork for the week. She liked days like this when there were very few patients under her care. Just now, the worst injured being Lieutenant Hernandez who had broken his arm and ankle. She couldn’t be too annoyed at him since he had been saving three kids from drowning when he injured himself.
It definitely helped that SG1 were not on active duty at the moment.
After the excitement of Daniel’s return, defeating Anubis and several other strenuous missions Hammond had given the premier team some time to recover. Sam was visiting her brother and his family, Teal’c was given permission to visit his son and Bra’tac allowing him to check how they had recovered from their recent incarceration, Jack had taken Cassie fishing while Daniel had taken a trip to New York.
With his memories still fragmented when it came to his youth, he’d decided to visit his parents’ graves in the hope of reconnecting with that part of his life. Janet knew Jack was a little worried that he was alone for this trip, but Daniel had convinced his friend that it was how he needed to be and promised that he’d spend the last few days of their leave fishing with Jack and Cassie.
“Doctor Fraiser, report to the Gateroom,” the speaker on the wall jumped to life suddenly.
Janet frowned at the call.
It had been too quiet, she should have known it wouldn’t last. Grabbing her kit, she headed to the Gateroom.
~
“General?” Janet asked, arriving in the Gateroom to find the Stargate sitting open but no sign of a patient.
Hammond shrugged slightly, a look of ‘don’t ask me’ in his eyes before nodding up to Walter.
“Dr Fraiser and General Hammond are waiting for you, Colonel Ferretti,” Walter said into the microphone making Janet frown confused again.
She had no time to ponder what was going on as the event horizon rippled and three people walked through. Ferretti on one side, Jacob Carter on the other, holding one hand each, the two men helped the young woman Janet couldn’t believe she was seeing walk slowly down to them. Turning to Hammond she saw the stunned look that was mirrored on Walter’s, and she knew her own, face. Finally, the small group reached the bottom of the ramp, and a grinning Ferretti turned to them.
“General George Hammond, Dr Janet Fraiser it is my complete and total pleasure to finally introduce you both to the very lovely, Mrs Sha’re Jackson,” he announced, unable to stop grinning.
Janet had dozens of questions going through her head but seeing the exhaustion on Sha’re’s face she put them aside, motioning the guard nearby to grab one of the wheelchairs that were kept next to the embarkation room. As soon as it was brought over, Janet moved Jacob out of the road and helped the young woman to sit.
“Sha’re, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” Janet smiled at her, “I’m going to take you down to the infirmary, I have to do some tests before I can let you sleep, but you’ll be able to rest there.”
Sha’re nodded silently, obviously overwhelmed by whatever she’d just been through but as they started to move, she found her voice.
“Ferretti,” the young woman called, “Will you come with me?”
Ferretti quickly glanced at Hammond to get permission.
“General Carter can give me the details of what happened,” Hammond said.
Ferretti nodded and, while Janet wheeled Sha’re out of the Gateroom, he moved to her side resting his hand comfortingly on her shoulder.
~
“Jacob, do you want to give me a clue?” Hammond asked as he sank into his seat, “Where did she come from?”
Jacob smiled and sat down across from his friend, “I heard rumours a while back that Ammonet had reappeared and was trying to build an army. I didn’t say anything because I couldn’t put Daniel through that. I worked on it every chance I got then a few weeks ago Selmac and I managed to infiltrate her court.”
“So how did Ferretti get involved?” Hammond asked when Jacob paused.
“I convinced Ammonet that Apophis was alive, and I’d been sent to take her to him so that they could be reunited,” Jacob explained, “Ammonet may have been evil, but boy was she dumb. Anyway, by coincidence it was the same planet that Ferretti and his team were on which helped me enormously.”
Hammond chuckled.
“When Ammonet saw Ferretti, she decided to kill him, he is one of the Tauri who killed her Pharaoh after all and knew him through Sha’re,” Jacob gave a self-satisfied smile, “I used the distraction to sedate her, and we took her to the Tok’ra where Ammonet was removed.”
Hammond leaned back for a moment his eyes closed.
“It’s been several months of miracles,” Hammond whispered happily, “First getting Daniel back and now…I can’t believe this.”
“Where is Daniel?” Jacob asked, laughing at the comical look that crossed his friend’s face as he realised the one thing he needed to do.
“New York,” Hammond stood and moved to the door calling to Walter.
The other man appeared almost instantly, “I’ve arranged an earlier flight for Dr Jackson, do you want me to make the call?”
~
Janet was already impressed by Sha’re Jackson’s tenacity. Ferretti had told her on the journey down to the infirmary how Sha’re insisted on walking through the Stargate. She remembered when Skaara had been freed from Klorel he’d initially been filled with energy before he crashed. He’d slept for the best part of a week then had been easily tired for a few more after that. She had no other experience unfortunately in the effect of the removal of a Goa’uld so hoped that Sha’re’s recovery would mirror her brothers’.
“Do I have enough?” Sha’re asked when Janet took some blood after the young woman was settled on a bed.
Janet smiled, “Yes, you do. I just want to do a few more tests before I let you sleep.”
Sha’re nodded, licking her lips and Janet realised she was working her way up to ask something.
“Is Dan’iel here?” the soft question was filled with fear when she finally managed to ask.
Janet took the young woman’s hand, “Not just now. He’s in New York but I’m sure General Hammond is calling him back. It’ll probably be a few hours before his plane touches down, so you just need to rest until then.”
Sha’re frowned and for a few seconds said nothing before looking over at Janet.
“I did not understand what you told me,” Sha’re looked embarrassed.
Janet winced, “I’m so sorry. All the time I spend dealing with people who aren’t from this world you’d think I’d be better at explaining things. Daniel is in another part of this country just now. To get back here he needs to take something called an aeroplane. It might take a few hours, but he will be here as soon as he possibly can. Make any more sense?”
Sha’re nodded.
“Good,” Janet smiled at her, “Now get some rest and hopefully by the time you wake up Daniel will be here.”
With that Sha’re lay back against the pillow letting her eyes close and Janet waited until she was sure the young woman was fast asleep before she left Sha’re to sleep.

Daniel was emotionally exhausted by the time the cab pulled up to the mountain, he was also extremely confused that he’d been called back to work when Hammond had told them they were not needed for the next two weeks. Walter’s call however had been gratefully received. Visiting his parent’s gravesite had been strangely comforting, somehow helping him unlock childhood memories that had been missing. It had also unfortunately let him remember the horrible day they’d died.
Paying the cab driver Daniel started into the mountain, absently flashing his ID at each of the security posts trying to think what could be so important that he’d been called in while on vacation. When the elevator doors opened, Daniel jerked back slightly at the unusual sight of General Hammond and Jacob Carter standing waiting for him.
“What’s going on?” Daniel demanded worriedly.
Hammond chuckled, “I promise there is absolutely nothing wrong, son. Your team are all still on leave. Come with us.”
Completely bemused Daniel followed the two men to the infirmary, assuming this was some refugee they needed him to speak with. Some things never changed.
“Daniel, finally,” Janet greeted him with a wide smile, “Was your plane delayed?”
He rolled his eyes about to retort but before he could say anything he spotted the woman sitting on the infirmary bed talking with Ferretti.
Staring at her, he finally managed to say, “Oh my God!!”
~
Sha’re woke up, confused for a moment where she was. Panic filled her but looking around the room she was in, she calmed quickly seeing people in the garb of the Tauri.
“Hey,” Ferretti appeared at her side, “I thought you were going to sleep all day.”
Sha’re smiled relieved that someone she knew was there while she waited for her beloved husband to arrive. Sitting up she was relieved that Ferretti took the seat beside her and he started to talk. Sha’re let the conversation relax her in the strange surroundings, reassured to have someone she knew by her side.
“Oh my God,” a familiar voice came from nearby and Sha’re felt her spirits lift seeing her husband standing there.
“Dan’iel,” she breathed, closing her eyes when he crossed the distance between them sliding his arms around her, holding her tightly.
Pulling back after a few minutes Daniel sat at her side on the edge of the bed and stared at her, his hand gently stroking her cheek as they studied one another.
“I like this,” Sha’re spoke first, gently fingering his short hair, “I can see your face fully.”
Daniel chuckled at her direct statement, “You haven’t changed.”
Sha’re shook her head tears filling her eyes, “I never thought I would see you again. I thought…”
“Shh,” Daniel whispered, pulling her into his arms once more holding her close allowing her to cry in his arms, his own tears slipping along his cheeks.
~
Daniel watched his beautiful wife while she slept. It felt like a dream, and he was sure the moment he left the infirmary she’d be gone again. So, when he was summoned to Hammond’s office, he hesitated.
“I’ll be here if she wakes up,” Janet promised him, “Go.”
Daniel nodded but before he left Sha’re’s side he fixed the covers around her and placed a lingering kiss on her forehead.
“Love you,” he whispered softly, watching her cuddle into her pillow with a smile touching her lips.
Assured she was resting comfortably, Daniel headed up to see the General. The door sat open waiting for him, so Daniel walked to the seat dreading what was to come.
“How is your wife?” Hammond asked once Daniel was seated.
Daniel shrugged, “She’s sleeping for now. Janet…Dr Fraiser has told me that from her experience with Skaara she believes that Sha’re will be weak and easily tired for a while, but she should recover.”
“Good,” Hammond nodded before taking a quick breath, “I’ve been informed that military intelligence wish to speak with her regarding the Goa’uld.”
“General…”
“I’ve already reminded them that she’s recovering, but this is something that will happen, Dr Jackson,” Hammond told the younger man, “Major Davis will conduct the interview and if it makes both of you more comfortable then you can be at her side the entire time.”
After a moment Daniel nodded, if Paul was involved then he felt better since he knew and trusted the Major
“For now, you’re on indefinite leave from SG1,” Hammond told him with a smile, “Go and be with your wife, you’ve spent far too long apart.”
*********************************************
“I am tired.”
Janet stood at Sha’re’s soft voice and stepped in front of the young woman folding her arms across her chest, “This meeting is adjourned.”
“Dr Frasier,” the goon who’d been sent to interview the ex-Goa’uld host in place of Major Davis protested, “We’ve more questions for Mrs Jackson.”
“And before this meeting began, I told you if she felt tired or unwell in any way you stopped,” Janet retorted, she could feel Daniel behind her helping Sha’re to her feet, “She is, it’s over. General Hammond will back me, if need be, do I need to call him?”
Both men towered over the doctor, but neither was able to disobey the sharp voice and, muttering under their breath, left the room.
Janet smiled at the couple as Daniel helped Sha’re to the VIP room they were sharing until the doctor agreed she was healthy enough to leave the base.
~
Sha’re sat on the bed watching Daniel fix her some tea. She felt a little guilty telling Janet she felt tired when she didn’t but talking about everything was harder than she realised and she needed some time away from it.
“Do you want me to leave you to sleep?” Daniel asked, pulling her thoughts back to the room.
Sha’re hated how cautious he was being around her just now, how he was so afraid that she would shatter if he raised his voice or hug her too tightly.
“Would you hold me?” Sha’re asked softly, wondering why they weren’t able to talk properly anymore.
Daniel sat on the bed and Sha’re slid closer, wrapping her arm across his waist while she rested her head against his chest.
“Are you feeling better?” Daniel whispered as she cuddled into him.
Sha’re hesitated but his warmth against her, and knowing how much he was worrying about her, she lied, “Yes.”
~
Daniel gently stroked Sha’re’s hair as she cuddled close to him. She’d been on Earth for just under a week now and Daniel hadn’t left the base not wanting to leave her. He’d been annoyed when he’d learned that it wasn’t Paul who’d come to do the interview. Though considering the other man was in hospital with a ruptured appendix, Daniel couldn’t be too mad. Hammond had agreed that they would leave the debrief for now, and that Jack would be the one to do it once he was back.
“Dan’iel?”
“Yeah?”
“What is the place you live like?” Sha’re asked.
Daniel smiled slightly, “It’s not very big. The others sort of persuaded me to buy it after…that doesn’t matter. But before today it was just somewhere to keep my things and somewhere to sleep when I’m not off-world or on the base.”
Sha’re looked up into his eyes, “And now?”
Daniel took a deep breath with a smile, “Now it’s our home, unless you want to move somewhere else.”
Sha’re smiled at him, sliding up and touching her lips to his in a soft kiss. Daniel closed his eyes at the kiss trying to find a way to pull back without hurting her feelings. She was still weak, and he didn’t want to be responsible for tiring her out, mostly because Janet would kill him and not release Sha’re from under her care for longer than she was planning.
“Sha’re, we can’t do that here,” Daniel whispered, catching her face before she could turn from him, “This isn’t the place for this, once we’re home and away from everyone I promise.”
*********************************************
Sha’re was restless.
She’d been trapped in this place for days now after being trapped within the Tauri’s base and was beginning to lose her temper. Of course she understood she was still recovering from the removal of the demon she’d been forced to carry but that didn’t mean she had to sit in the few small rooms and look at the new world she was in through the windows.
Daniel was driving her crazy as well, constantly watching over her but never coming too close. She was beginning to worry that perhaps he was only with her just now out of a sense of obligation.
“Sha’re, do you want something to drink?” Daniel appeared from the bedroom.
“No,” she said but before she could speak another word Daniel had disappeared into the kitchen.
Frustrated Sha’re felt tears fill her eyes, she needed Daniel right now, but he wasn’t here. The man who was had been alone for so much longer than they’d been together and Sha’re was suddenly sure that she had lost him.
“Sha’re,” Daniel said as he re-entered the room, stopping when he saw her crying before rushing to her side and wrapping her in his arms, “What’s wrong?”
Sha’re sniffed, “I am just accepting the truth.”
“What?”
“I know how long it has been,” Sha’re told him, wiping her eyes, “I just needed some time to accept that you have moved on.”
Daniel stared at her completely stunned.
“I just hope we can remain friends,” Sha’re continued, “And that you will not…”
She didn’t get a chance to say anything else as Daniel kissed her, a deep kiss designed to put rest to her fears and reassure her of his feelings.
When they parted, Daniel breathed, “I belong to you. I have always been yours from the moment you looked in my eyes. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Daniel beamed at her before saying, “I’m just trying to let you heal from all you’ve been through.”
Sha’re smiled slightly and pulled him close for another kiss.

The commissary was full when he hobbled through the doors, discovering a lot of new faces had arrived during the time he’d spent in the infirmary. Grabbing some orange juice and an apple pastry he glanced round finding a familiar face hidden away in the corner table. He focussed on the empty chair across from the man and started for it, nodding hello to the people who greeted him.
“Hi, Daniel,” he greeted the man sitting there who looked up surprised.
“Ferretti?” wide blue eyes blinked at him behind what looked to be new glasses, “I didn’t know you were out of the infirmary.”
“Out but I have to go back in an hour,” Ferretti shrugged, “Doc Warner will come after me otherwise.”
A slight smile touched the younger man’s lips but disappeared quickly, the exhaustion clear to see on his face.
“So, how are you doing?” Ferretti decided just to go straight to the point, “I heard you’re bunking in the Colonel’s spare room?”
Daniel gave a slight shrug, “I need to find an apartment, but it’s not easy with everything we’re doing here.”
“And being back on Earth?”
Daniel’s eyes closed, and Ferretti worried he’d pushed just a little too much, but he was worried about the archaeologist.
“It’s too cold,” Daniel spoke finally with a wry smile.
Ferretti chuckled, although a little annoyed Daniel had avoided the actual question.
“I have orders to walk around the base,” Ferretti told him after finishing his breakfast, “Feel like keeping me company?”
Shrugging Daniel told him, “Sure. I’ll make sure you don’t fall on your face.”
~
Daniel walked with the man who had been seriously injured protecting the people of Abydos, happy to leave the noise of the commissary. In all honesty he’d only been there because Jack was on some kind of mother-hen mission to ensure Daniel ate, slept and didn’t spend all his time working. He seemed to have some spies working for him, but Daniel couldn’t work out who they were.
“How have your first few missions gone?” Ferretti asked as they walked slowly through the base.
“Okay,” Daniel answered, a little hesitancy filling his voice that he couldn’t stop.
Ferretti’s eyebrows rose, “Just okay? I thought I’d need to get a dictionary to keep up with your description.”
Unable to stop himself, Daniel let out a slight chuckle before pulling it back. He wasn’t here to have fun, he was here to find his family.
“You’re allowed to laugh,” Ferretti told him, “You know that.”
Daniel stopped walking, turning to someone who he barely knew and wouldn’t really consider a friend.
“They’re not going to hate you for taking care of yourself,” Ferretti reminded him, “Daniel, you can’t punish yourself for something you had no control over.”
Daniel stiffened but before he could say anything, or leave, the other man caught his shoulder looking exhausted.
“Are you okay?” Daniel asked worriedly.
Ferretti nodded, “Just need to sit.”
Daniel helped him into the nearest room where he dropped into the closest chair. Ferretti caught Daniel’s arm and pulled him to the seat beside him.
“Listen to me,” Ferretti said softly, “I saw her taken and Sha’re, she didn’t cower in fear. Your girl was a tiger, fought every step of the way, be proud of her for that.”
Daniel’s mask cracked, and tears filled his eyes.
“I just want to go home,” Daniel sighed softly looking up at the other man, “And I can’t sleep because I’m thinking about everything that’s happening to her.”
“I know there’s nothing I can say to make you feel better,” Ferretti said, “But when I’m back in the field, I will be looking for her too. Every mission. I promise.”
Daniel smiled slightly, “Thank you.”
“I should get back to the infirmary before the doctor sends out a search party,” Ferretti said, “Can you give me a hand to get there?”
Nodding Daniel helped the other man to his feet and walked slowly with him through the corridors towards the infirmary.
Doctor Warner gave them a nod as Ferretti headed back to his bed, grateful that Daniel took the crutches from him to sit them in the corner as he leaned back against his pillow.
“I’ll leave you to rest,” Daniel told him.
Ferretti caught his arm, “Try and get some rest too. And if you need to talk at any time, I’m here.”
Surprised Daniel nodded, “Thanks.”
“You have friends, Daniel,” Ferretti reminded him, “You’re not alone.”
Daniel gave him another small smile before leaving the room. Closing his eyes, Ferretti fell asleep exhausted from his walk hoping he’d helped the younger man at least a little.
