Finn loved his housemates, he really did. They were weird, they were quirky, and they could be a pain in his arse every single day of the week. But he loved them anyway.

Today was one of the days where they were being a pain in his arse.

If Finn was being completely honest, he didn’t mind St. Patrick’s Day. It was fun, being able to go out drinking, especially everything that happened when you came home drunk (before the blinding hangover). And when you told them you were Irish, it was like a shortcut to cheaper or free drinks, so Finn ended up on free drinks all night long.

What he hated about it was when his friends, in the spirit of this stupid holiday, dressed up in all green with stupid green hats and went out dressed like the rest of the crowds, trying to score free drinks and have some sort of wild time. The only fun part of the whole thing was the fact that Louis actually looked like a leprechaun.

As the only coffee shop in the village, and therefore the only place that did coffee before 12pm, the boys at McLaren’s coffee shop were expected to take their job very seriously. And they did. Or, at least, Mauro did, and only when it came to actually making the coffee. As a uni student who had spent his gap year in Brazil, the young man had taken the chance to learn about different roasts and coffee-making techniques, meaning that they could put good use to the coffee that Éric sold them for their specialty roasts. It also meant that he was able to expand the menu, giving the people of the village more choice on their caffeinated morning beverage so that they could get on with (and hopefully enjoy) their day — particularly with a village full of Italians.

Niki, on the other hand, took it seriously when he was making coffee for one person and one person only. For everyone else, he made decent coffee. But that one person had to have the best coffee made with his best skills every time, and anything that was fucked got drunk by either him or Mauro.

Mauro was tired of Niki’s fuck ups.

Louis loved his year ten English class, he truly did. As head of department, he had the pleasure of teaching top set for both GCSE year groups, which gave him a little less of a headache when it came to marking homework and practice papers — the majority of the time, his kids knew what they were talking about, and that made it all a lot easier to interpret. Yes, sometimes they had their moments — like right then, with the boys all being chatty instead of listening to him — but for the most part they were an absolute pleasure.

Which is why, when he whacked his marker against the whiteboard three times, he expected them to stop talking and listen to him. Which they did. Instantly.

“Thank you, Year Ten.” He smiled at the boys, before heading over to his desk. He picked up the Anthology on the desk. “Does everyone have their anthologies today?” The chorus of yeses did not fill him with hope. He put the Anthology down and picked up a stack of photocopies. “If you need a photocopy of today’s poem, hands up and I’ll come ro—” Louis stopped short when he realised whose hand shot up. He sighed. “Again, Priestley?”

Louis hadn’t expected to find love in gardening. It was a peaceful activity so contrary to the life that he was used to that he thought he would find it boring, unsatisfactory. He didn’t expect to fall in love with it so deeply that he and Mauro ended up with a garden full of plants, edible and decorative. He didn’t expect to want to wake up in the morning and check on his garden, make sure nothing was dying, before getting on with the rest of his day. And yet, he didn’t regret a single bit of it. He was absolutely in love with his garden, and there was very little he would give it up for — Mauro had first-hand knowledge and experience of that, as shown by the fact that despite the love his partner had for him, he was not allowed anywhere near his plants.

Hands wrapped around a hot mug of coffee, Mauro made his way over to the back door, wrapped up in a blanket even though he had a thick jumper and joggers on underneath it all. It was a cold winter morning, and he didn’t honestly expect to be heading anywhere near the garden at this time of year. But the back door was open, letting cold air into the house, and Mauro had to hold himself back from shivering as he stood in the doorway, looking outside.

Despite him feeling as though it wasn’t anywhere near the time of year for him to be heading out into the garden, because it was so cold and frosty and there was still a thin layer of snow on the ground, there was one person who was determined to still go outside and tend to the garden. Because, of course, the kids were on holidays so he didn’t have any lessons to plan or classes to teach.

And that was Mauro’s partner (not yet husband, because the law was bullshit.)

“Alright, alright!” Mauro quickly tried to stuff his jumper into his backpack. The thing was already full from all of the other clothes he had shoved in there so that he could change into his cosplay. He was already beginning to regret not just coming in cosplay on the train, like Finn and Ollie had. It would have been far easier. But he’d come straight from home, instead of staying at a hotel closer to the convention centre like they had suggested when they’d originally bought their tickets.

He wished they’d actually forked out the money to share a hotel room.

Once a year when every single Scotsman in the village was in a kilt, some with a shirt, others brave (or stupid) enough to go without, all of them out to celebrate.

Burns Night.

With the number of Scottish people in the village (in reality it was two families, but because they were such large families they counted as many), it made sense that every year they would rent out the restaurant in the manor hotel for their celebrations, inviting family and friends from afar to stay at the hotel so that they could all celebrate together.

It was an insane event.

François needed the extra help for it every year.

Watching the sunrise was, perhaps, one of Louis’ least favourite things to do. It should not be, he should enjoy seeing the beauty of the world, wonder at something he could take a photo of, relish in the memories of the peace that came at the dawn, when most of the world was still asleep and he had it all to himself — the sky, the sun, the very air he breathed.

He hated it with a passion because it was too fucking early for anyone with a lick of sense to be awake with their eyes open (because he’d been awake with his eyes closed multiple times, and it was a very different feeling).

That was how he felt until he met him. Until he met his sunshine.
