The Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting

Within minutes of starting this, it’s apparent that the people who wrote it read a summary of the first movie and decided that was enough. Why would Jim join the cops after all of that? Would they even let him??? Pretty much all of Jim’s characterization is baffling, and it doesn’t even matter because it quickly kills him off. The rest of the movie is a retread of the first with his wife and Jake Busey…so we ruined the homoerotic undertones too. Indeed, with only one gender flipped, a lot of what made the first movie great just becomes a pretty standard “woman is harassed by creep” movie.

Jake Busey is fine, but there’s way too much of him, and his single bit gets overplayed. The cinematography is awful and they put a terrible orange filter over everything to make it worse. Cool plane stunt! That CGI shot of Jake dying, lmao!!! Was it worth watching The Hitcher II to get there??? No

Bats (1999) dir. Louis Morneau

Lou Diamond Phillips is a small town sheriff who has a bit of a bat problem on his hands.  Specifically the government “lost” a pair of genetically modified super intelligent bats that can pass on their modifications via a virus to other bats.  LDP and the world’s best bat doctor have to team up and defeat the super smart bats before everyone is killed.  Man this is a rough movie.  Apparently it went from script purchase to theatrical release is five months and boy does it show.  During close ups the bats are unconvincing puppets, in wide shots they are terrible even for 1999 CG.  Can’t say I’d recommend this for any reason.

My rating: 5/10

Mediocre, but mostly watchable - apart from the bits where the director decided to go all batshit (Eh? Eh?) with the image distortion and filters in an attempt to leave us even more disoriented than the obnoxiously quick cuts had already. I mean, it worked, but not in a good way. Bat puppets are kinda cute, though.
