"The diet?" Esme asks, a smile playing on her lips. It always dismayed others of their kind. Why, Esme isn't entirely sure. A personal choice made with the understanding in what they were committing to. That is if the choice was never offered to the other. Esme can understand their confusion there, but the ones who mock them simply for choosing to exist a certain way? It truly gets under Esme's skin.

"Not many of us adopt this diet, but it's an alternative for those of us who wish for another way. The venom isn't compatible with animals, it kills them immediately so there's no need to worry about accidentally turning anything," she explains, freshly gold eyes examining the other's expression. "If you're used to the traditional diet, adopting this one can be incredibly difficult, but like I said. It's all down to personal choice. We can try together if you want?"

I think of a book that I’ve read countless times, the book that was still on my bedside table with pages indented at the same passages that I’ve been coming to for the past couple of months. It was maybe some kind of a masochistic trait, a grappling of things I had no control over, but I read them still.

It all felt like a cruel prank, maybe on them, maybe on himself.
