He notices it first in the quiet moments.

The way you linger in bed longer than usual, breath slow but uneasy, like sleep hasn’t helped at all. The way your movements are careful, guarded—one hand pressed low against your stomach when you think he isn’t looking. Even your scent is different, faintly sharp beneath the familiar warmth that always draws him closer.

He frowns over it.

“Did you eat enough?” he asks, voice soft and concerned as he hands you a cup of tea. He’d brewed it himself—too strong, maybe, but made with care. “You didn’t finish your bread this morning.”

You offer a tired smile. “I’m just… not feeling great.”

That answer bothers him.

Normally, when you’re sick, there’s a rhythm to it. He can almost sense the illness—fever, infection, the way your body fights something foreign. This is different. Your heartbeat is steady, your skin warm, but there’s an exhaustion clinging to you like damp wool. Your scent carries discomfort, yes, but not danger.

Still, you look miserable.

When you wince standing up, he’s at your side in an instant, hands hovering uncertainly, afraid to touch in case he makes it worse.

“Did I do something?” he blurts out, ears twitching in worry before he can stop himself. “Did I… upset you?”

That somehow makes him feel worse.

You laugh weakly, shaking your head. “No. Gods, no. It’s not you.”

It takes longer than he’d like to admit.

He fetches blankets—three of them—because you keep shivering, then frowns when you push them away five minutes later, complaining that you’re suddenly too warm. He brings you food, water, then more water. He suggests a walk, thinking fresh air might help, only to immediately apologize when you groan at the idea.

By the time you curl in on yourself on the sofa, knees drawn up, face tight with pain, he’s pacing like a restless animal.

“Tell me what’s wrong,” he pleads quietly. “Please. I don’t know how to help if I don’t understand.”

You hesitate, then sigh. “It’s… my cycle. I get bad cramps. I’m just really tired and sore.”

He freezes.

“…Your what?”

You explain—slowly, carefully, because he’s staring at you like you’ve just revealed a secret curse. His brows knit together as he listens, head tilting, processing every word. The more you talk, the more his expression shifts—from confusion, to concern, to something sharp and protective.

By the time you finish, his jaw is set.

“That happens to you every month?” he asks, incredulous.

You nod. “Pretty much.”

Silence.

Then, very softly: “That’s awful.”

Everything changes after that.

He kneels in front of you, warm hands settling over yours with surprising confidence now that he knows what he’s dealing with. His thumbs brush comfortingly over your knuckles, slow and grounding.

“You should’ve told me sooner,” he murmurs—not accusing, just regretful. “I thought you were… sad because of me.”

Your heart aches a little at that.

“I’ll be fine,” you say. “It just hurts.”

His ears pin back. “Hurts isn’t fine.”

He helps you lie down properly, arranging pillows until you’re supported just right. When you curl again, he carefully settles behind you, pressing his chest to your back, radiating warmth like a living hearth. One large hand rests low on your abdomen, tentative at first.

“Is this okay?” he asks.

When you nod, he gently increases the warmth—just enough to ease the tension, just enough to soothe.

You melt instantly.

“Oh,” you breathe. “That helps.”

His relief is visible.

He stays like that for hours, barely moving. If you shift, he adjusts. If you whimper, his hold tightens protectively. He hums under his breath—low, rhythmic, a sound meant for calming distressed pups. You feel it vibrate through him, steady and safe.

“I don’t like that your body does this to you,” he mutters at one point, nuzzling your hair. “If I could fight it, I would.”

Later, when you’re half-asleep and finally comfortable, he presses a kiss to your temple.

You smile despite the pain. “I know.”

“Next time,” he says softly, “you tell me right away. I’ll be ready. Heating stones, tea, blankets—everything.”
