What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across? :)

There are three pieces of advice I’ve gotten about writing that have really stuck with me, and one piece of advice that I think is important for fan fiction writers.

If you want to get better at writing, read and write a lot. You don’t get better at writing without practicing, so if you have a great idea for a story, don’t put it off because you don’t think you’re good enough. Write it anyway. And the more you read, the more you pick up on in terms of how successful writers write. Read stuff that’s critically acclaimed. Read the stuff you were/are assigned in school (it’s assigned for a reason). Read until you figure out why you like the stuff you like from a writing standpoint.

Kill your darlings. I learned this one from my husband. When you’re writing, it can be easy to grow attached to elements of your story: that one character who inspired the story to begin with; that plot point that you think is really clever; or that paragraph that you just totally nailed, stylistically. But what happens when that one character ends up being totally not essential to the story anymore? Or if you can’t seem to fit in that plot point into the story in a place that makes sense? Or that perfect paragraph is full of information that’s not relevant in your latest draft? You’ve got to kill your darlings: get rid of the character, forget the plot point, delete the paragraph.

Withhold information that’s not relevant. This advice has been floating around Tumblr, and I think it’s excellent. It’s something I ended up doing in what’s definitely my most popular story (With Affection), and I think (for people who were able to read the story the whole way through without waiting for updates, at least) it made it more interesting as more and more information got revealed.

As for my own advice that I like to give people who write fan fiction:

Write the whole story first before posting any of it. It’s so so so damn hard to do this, I know. First off, it’s so tempting to post as soon as you have something, because for many of us, we write fan fiction specifically to share it with people. And second, it’s a really serious time/effort investment up front, considering that you won’t know if people will like what you’ve written until you post it. Posting one chapter at a time means that you can see what the response to the story is before you invest more hours into writing it.

But waiting until the story is finished to post it gives you some serious benefits. First, you’re not going to abandon your story, and you can make your updates regular (you can update every day, or every other day, or once a week ... so if you don’t feel inspired to write for a month, you don’t have to wait a month between updates). And second, you don’t have to write around plot holes. If you’ve posted chapter three, where you’ve said that your character’s birthday is in May, and when you sit down to write chapter six, you realize that everything would be way better if your character’s birthday were in October, you can’t go back and change it. But if you haven’t posted your story already, it’s an easy fix.
