How Diet Impacts Bone Health - Tufts
How Diet Impacts Bone Health – Tufts
Healthy bone is a balancing act. Our bodies continually remove older bone and replace it with new. As adults, if we lose bone at too fast a rate, replace it at too slow a rate, or both, the result is osteoporosis—weak, porous bones that fracture easily. The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that nearly 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, and over 43 million more have its…

What is a T Score Bone Density and How to Improve It?
What is a T Score Bone Density, and How to Improve It?
Have you heard the term T score bone density at your doctor’s office? If you’re undergoing a bone density test, your results will come in the form of what is known as a T score. A T score bone density reveals how much lower or higher your specific bone density is, compared to that of a healthy adult at age 30. With this score, your medical care provider will be able to diagnose if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis conditions and also be able to determine if you are at a greater risk of fracturing or breaking a bone.
A normal T score bone density ranges between -1 and above. A low bone density, which indicates a condition known as osteopenia, is between -1 and -2.5. A T score of -2.5 and below reveals a likely diagnosis of osteoporosis.
If your T score does show that you have low bone density, your physician will come up with a treatment plan to help improve the condition of your bones. This may include taking a prescription medicine, making changes to your diet and nutrition, and incorporating exercise into your daily routine. Regular screenings should be performed in order to see if the bones are improving, worsening, or staying the same. The subsequent T score bone density results can improve with the right care plan in place.

Latest Bone Density Test For Adults
Bone Density Test in Adults
Are you looking for a bone density test? Until the last few years, bone density has not been discussed much. But, nowadays some shocking facts have emerged. One in every 4 men, and one in 2 women, over the age of 50, will break a bone because of osteoporosis. These statistics are quite scary, thus, arise the need to measure bone density.
Importance of Measuring Bone Density
Bone Density Test – Beammed.
Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bone density is decreased, and its structural integrity is weakened, which makes the bone more brittle. This disease is progressive and with time, the outer portion of the bone (also known as the cortex) becomes more porous and thinner and makes the bone more prone to fractures. Osteoporosis affects millions of people worldwide. As the disease usually does not show any symptoms, most individuals don’t even know that they have it until is to late and they break a bone.
Therefore, checking the health of your bones periodically is very important. And most medical experts recommend measuring the bone density.
There are a lot of ways to check the health of your bones. One most common way is through densitometry. Densitometry measures the density of your bones and how much minerals are contained in your them. Minerals in your bones are essential in making your bones healthy. However, if you don’t have sufficient minerals, you may acquire bone diseases such as osteoporosis due to the weakness of the bones.
Benefits of Measuring Bone Density
The bone density test allows you to know how much density your bones have. By knowing that, you can avoid bone fractures. And by improving the bone density, you can prevent such painful situations. This means you can increase your bone density and make your bones healthier before they reach the point of no return.
Furthermore, bone density test is also helpful in determining the risks of bone breakage. It’s crucial to know whether you have a risk of fracturing your bones. This way, you will be able to avoid specific activities that may damage your skeletal system. These activities may include dance, sports, and other activities that involve physical movements.
Effects of Low Bone Density
Low bone density has a lot of negative effects. For example, bone diseases, especially the ones that affect the spine, can result in decrease in height or hunchbacks. The chances of fracturing your bones with everyday activities such as playing sports or exercising also become high. In worst cases, it even comes to bone transplant to help the bone regeneration process.

Osteoporosis - the ugly and fragile truth
This post is long, but it is a very important (and potentially game-changing) post if you suffer from an eating disorder. As many of you might know, eating disorders often cause osteopenia, which then, if not treated and reversed, causes osteoporosis. In the ‘’recovery community’’ it seems like this has been normalized, it is something that ‘’everybody’’ has. First of all, this is wrong. Some can be severely underweight yet have a healthy skeleton and their periods. That does not mean they are not sick enough or healthy, it means that they have a strong skeleton and good luck. This has to be stated before I continue this post, as people with eating disorders tend to constantly look for proof and signs that they are ‘’bad anorexics/bulimics/whatsoever’’, not sick enough and does not need recovery. False. Osteoporosis and osteopenia are the medical term for low bone density. It oftenly occurs in eating disorder patients due to being undernourished and/or underweight (for your body’s setpoint) over time, and for females; due to a lack of period. Osteopenia is ‘’osteoporosis light’’, and can be reversed if treated. If not, it will turn into osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is irreversible, but the condition can be improved and stopped from progressing with treatment. For eating disorder patients, this means recovery. This is more or less what low bone density looks like. For more information, see this. Now to what I wanted to express with this post; osteoporosis is a severe and inhibitory disorder. It is frightening to see that so many young people get it, and don’t seem to take it seriously. If you suffer from osteopenia, please change things before it is too late. If you suffer from osteoporosis, please change things so it does not develop and spread. In december I got a job as a nursing assistant at a nursing home. I work closely with osteoporosis patients, and trust me when I say it is heartbreaking. Many are in severe pain. They loose height, often over 10 cm, and get a deformed, hunch back. They are often sent to nursing homes after a simple fall. For example, they’ve slipped on the icy streets on their way to the grocery store. A simple everyday activity that can not be avoided. Non-osteoporosis sufferers would perhaps get a bruise or two. Osteoporosis sufferers on the other hand, get completely crippled and disabled. They break, just... break. Back, feet, arms, hip bone or neck - perhaps several bones at once. They can not walk properly, and often sit in weelchair, some for a week, others for months. They need help with basic things, such as showering and eating. Many have to wear diapers, napkins whilst eating, and stay in bed the majority of the day. They get bedsores and are on strong medications. I can see the humiliation in their eyes sometimes when we change diapers, wash them and feed them like babies, even though we smile, hold hands and make things comfortable. They are grateful, but I can see how they suffer. The difference is that these people are 80 to 90 years old, and osteoporosis is common in that age. It perhaps starts progressing after menopause, or later. This does not happen because they are old, but because they have osteoporosis and fell. The reason why they got osteoporosis is age related. Just because you got osteoporosis due to an eating disorder, it does not mean your case is much different. Osteoporosis is osteoporosis. In your life, chances are high that you will slip on the ice or fall out of bed one day. With osteoporosis, this puts you in risk of ending up like the patients I care for at work, even if you are 20. You see those female underweight athletes might envy for their physique? Well, way too often they loose their periods, and eventually get osteoporosis. It does not get discovered until the ballerina slips and her ankle shatters, she has to give up her sport and passion immediately. Lack of period combined with restrictive eating and a too low body fat percentage (or one of these) is not healthy, even though these people hastag their instagram photos with #healthy and #fitness. It is not healthy. Take this from me as the daughter of a woman who was among the most winning fitness athletes in Scandinavia when she was at my age. If she was young today, she would probably had been one of those insta-famous girls flexing their abs and ripped bodies on instagram, whilst getting praised for their ‘’healthy’’ physique and clean diet. Well, guess what? My mum did not have her period, and had to give up fitness due to this as she knew how dangerous it was. She also noticed some mental changes that she did not appreciate; she got rigid and food obsessed. If she had kept on going, she would probably have been infertile and with osteoporosis now. Luckily she never had an eating disorder, but she realized her sport was unhealthy. She is not a healthy and fit woman with three children and a life. No, not all athletes are unhealthy (though I dare to say that most fitness athletes are during their competitive phases), and yes, some people are naturally ‘’ripped’’, but is this you? Be honest with yourself. Body fat is essential. Loosing those 10 lbs of ‘’excess fat’’ might mean loosing so much more; your health, mind, social life, and last but not least - your bone density. If your low bone density starts as early as in your teens, 20s or 30s, imagine how bad it will be once you are older. Mark my words. I see the ugly and fragile truth every time I go to work. Eat, relax and recover whilst you can. Imagine being 25 and lying in a hospital bed with broken bones after a light fall, looking back; was it worth it? You got your toned stomach, you felt in control whilst eating your 1800-calorie diet with prepped lunches consiting of rice, broccoli and chicken, you got your likes - but was it really worth it? Do you feel good when you look back at years used on exercising, counting and obsessing about something that really ment nothing at all? You have one life, there is a world out there of colours, flavours, people and experiences, and this is how you spend your life? Do you want to spend your whole existence fighting against your body, just to weigh 10% less? Let’s stop seeing ripped bodies, chronic dieting and lack of periods as something normal. Let’s open our eyes and redefine healthy. Sincerely, Amalie
