Michael Lowenthal’s new story collection, “Sex With Strangers,” is nimble in its particulars. The stories take place in gay clubs, on cruises, along beautiful beaches and in humble small-town kitchens. His characters are men and women, gay and straight, at home and abroad, beautiful and less beautiful than they once were. There’s an ease to his storytelling, too. Nothing feels strained, and the stories slow down and speed up until their climaxes arrive with a weirdly deadening ambivalence.

Some aspects of the past are celebrated, others expunged, as each generation reshapes its legacy in line with current needs. Although the past has ceased to be a sanction for inherited power or privilege, as a focus of personal and national identity and as a bulwark against massive and distressing change it remains as potent a force as ever in human affairs.

Such concern with historical and sociological dimensions of literature requires a theory of history and society ... the historical explanation of literature has to address the extent to which particular social structures find expression in individual literary works and what function these works perform in society. Man is involved in specific relations of production throughout his history. These relations present themselves socially as classes in struggle with each other, and the development of their relationship forms the real basis for the various cultural spheres. The specific structure of production, i.e. the economy, is the independent explanatory variable not only for the legal forms of property and organisation of state and government but, at the same time, for the shape and quality of human life in each historical epoch. ... A genuine, explanatory history of literature must proceed on materialistic principles. That is to say, it must investigate the economic structures as they present themselves in literature, as well as the impact which the materialistically interpreted work of art has in the economically determined society.

one of the ways i’ve chosen to engage with the possible is via a portrait project of folks involved. since the exhibition is very much about process, i’m using the camera i enjoy using the most – my rollei – and showing contact sheets. i’ve steadily added to my collection over the course of the show.

there are two weeks left to check out the book, which lives on-site at the berkeley art museum, in the remarkable possible library.
