                              Hexagrams: Structure and Meaning

Dominant theme: Information structure lies at the core of interpretation of the hexagrams.

Interpretation of the I Ching hexagrams can be conducted in various different ways. This applies to their structure as well as to their meaning. Ultimately the meaning of a hexagram derives from its structure. 

The hexagram can be viewed as six lines in temporal order from bottom to top. That is to say the first (bottom) line represents the beginning of a process, event, or relationship while the sixth (top) line represents the end or culmination of same.

Alternatively, the hexagram can be viewed as two trigrams, upper (or outer) and lower (or inner), in relation to one another. The bottom 3 lines of the hexagram, called the lower trigram, are viewed as the inner aspect of the change taking place. The top three lines of the hexagram, called the upper trigram, are viewed as the outer aspect. The change described is the dynamic of the inner (personal) aspect in relation to the outer (external) situation.

In addition to this psychological interpretation, the two trigrams may be seen as related temporally, the lower trigram representing an earlier time or stage of development in relation to the upper trigram. Change is, however, always viewed as fluid rather than fixed. Any given hexagram can change into any other though some changes are more probable based upon the specific line structures and symmetries involved.
