Summary: Protip: Don't spend 12hrs working on code. I don't care if you're bionic, don't do it. Or, I watched Free Guy and was liike wow. Keys is literally so autistic. I wonder if there's any fanfiction of him being autistic and there WAS. Exactly one beautifully written meltdown fic and i was like imma do that imma write a fic inspired by this so i did. Chase stared at the computer in his lap. At the screen of code he's been agonizing over for who knows how long. The program wasn't working. It definitely should be, he's gone over the code four times trying to find whatever error he missed but it's yielding nothing but increased frustration when he tests it and nothing happens.
The only option he really has is to restart. But this is hours of work-- hours of slaving over this stupid little laptop that he'd lose because of what's probably one line of code he missed and can't find. He hates restarting, loathes losing hours of progress on a 'first draft.'
A hand lands on his shoulder, one that's hard and identifiable as Marcus based purely on the fact it's made mostly out of metal. Despite this, his synthetic skin burns against Chase-- which, of course, isn't possible unless he developed a new bionic ability and decided to turn on him-- again-- but chances are pretty low that that's happened.
(Again.)
Still, he shrugs off the hand, turning back to look at the android with wide eyes. Marcus stares back at him with a blank expression, one he wears more often than not now that he's stopped putting up a facade of human emotional responses. "When's the last time he slept?"
Chase just turns back around. He doesn't need this right now, he needs to finish this project. He said he could finish it in a few hours, and it's already well beyond that mark. This program could help take a massive load off Adam, Leo and Marcus until other locations are finished and more mission overseers can be promoted. Hell, it'll even help after that happens.
He scrolls back to the top of the project, trying to scan the code- just one more time- but finds himself squinting beyond diagrams, theories, digital post-it notes and warnings on his information hud. He can barely read any of the letters, numbers and symbols that were supposed to create something helpful but sit there like a useless pile of junk.
Chase swings the mouse over to the New Project button near the top, the sound of plastic on the countertop a grating swoosh of agony that's so much louder than it ever had any right to be.
(Why didn't Douglas give him an on/off switch for his bionics?)
He ground his teeth, a habit that he'd been doing since before he started highschool and one day is going to cost him his teeth. "Dude," Marcus starts, his voice like a freight train in Chase's ear-- it's enough to make him flinch, so the next thing Marcus says he, evidently, turns the volume down so low you wouldn't be able to hear it unless you took his voice box out and put your ear right up next to it, "How long have you been out here?"
Chase continues to glare at the code, another thing popping up on his HUD. The time. 2:32. He'd been working on this for nearly twelve hours.
(Teach him to think "Oh, one more hour can't hurt." Really, he should've learned that six years ago. Probably longer.)
His hands falter, and he pulls them away from the computer enough to notice how much he's shaking, the trembling through his entire body that feels like low-blood sugar and a panic attack had a baby.
(Ew.)
Without the mouse in his hand and the keyboard underneath his fingers, grounding him to the real world and giving him something to focus on, he's overcome with the sudden urge to bang his head on the counter he's working on. Again, this would yield little no results other than pain, and he's overwhelmed enough as it is.
Instead, he reaches his shaking hands up to run through his hair, only to catch the strands in his hand and yank. His scalp burns where he pulls hairs out completely, but he can't bring himself to stop, slowly dragging his still-gripped mess of semi-gelled hair until his slimy hands cover his eyes and he wants nothing more than to be drowned in a vat of acid to get rid of the feeling.
But there are no vats of acid for him to drown himself in, so instead he finds himself standing from the desk with little more than the thought of getting away from the danger of his own senses. Then, he’s standing in the medbay.
The lights are off, and with Douglas gone to the Elite Force and nobody actively injured, it’s empty. Marcus has evidently followed him, something he didn’t notice in the walk in his panic to get out.
His shoes squeak when he tries to rock onto the balls of his feet, a screaming sound that genuinely brings up warning on his HUD. His hands find their way to his arms, too-long nails digging into them. Without the focus of his computer or the code in front of him, all he wants to do is scream and hit things– anything, something to distract from the sensory overload that makes his very skin feel horrible.
Marcus grabs him when his hand first makes contact with his shoulder, solid arms wrapped around him and burying his face in unscented clothes. He squirms, and eventually he finds himself sinking to the floor with Marcus still wrapped around him. His throat burns and his hands hurt, and he doesn’t have the foggiest idea why.
His face is wet, and a sound he can’t identify with his bionics working overtime makes him drag his throbbing hands to his ears. His throat burns, like he got rugburn on his vocal cords. His head hits solid metal, but it doesn’t make the feelings go away. Abruptly, he realizes he’s screaming. The realization makes him snap his mouth shut, carelessly clacking his teeth together so his brain rattles and his jaw aches. A whimper follows and his squirming reignites until Marcus tightens the arms wrapped around him.
He slumps, a broken sob raking along his strained throat. The fight suddenly leaking out of him so he’s just laying against his brother, crying. He feels pathetic, suddenly. Useless– freaking out over a program that would take only a few hours to rewrite.
He opens his mouth to apologize, but all that comes out is a breath of hot air. Above him, he hears things whirr when Marcus activates his voice box and fan, “It’s alright.”
His volume is still low, though it doesn’t grate any more than it would’ve three hours ago. The fan whirring to life makes his chest rumble slightly, a layer of surprisingly calming sensory input that makes Chase wish he hadn’t already slumped so he could simply melt away the tension still writhing in his muscles.
“I know how it is, don’t worry about it,” Marcus continues, chest mimicking the way it’s supposed to move when a human talks, “We can stay here as long as you need.”
One good thing about Marcus being an android: he doesn’t really get bored easily. He really could sit here with Chase for the next few hours with plenty to entertain him, having full access to the internet. He once told them that he could bring up games on his HUD– something Chase is forever jealous about.
However long they lay there, with Marcus positively compressing his brother, it’s long enough for Chase to doze off into a dreamless sleep, where Marcus picks him up and deposits him on the couch in the mentors quarters and settles in on the chair to watch tv until he wakes up.
LR:EF FANS.
Keyan Carlile made this post asking what a modern reboot of lr/mm/ef would look like! best answers get put in the lref retrospective! I know some of you guys LOVE making modern suggestions of the shows, so please comment!! https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxN2nM8fPWI0nBaHtvyGBPWGm4lVMXHw6v
you MUST do 6 with domestic Kaz. i don't CARE what ship but i NEED IT.
Coming right up, Kells!
Prompt: "Hey. I'm a rational, grown adult. There's nothing wrong with building a blanket fort!"
---
"Oh, my gosh, Kaz, why?" Chase looked at the living room, which was now covered in mountains of pillows, blankets, and an assortment of sticks propping up those pillows and blankets.
Kaz, who was finding the best place to put his stuffed Tecton plushie, looked up at Chase, "why, what?"
"Why on earth would you make a mess of our penthouse?!" Chase practically screeched.
Looking mildly offended, Kaz put his hand to his chest, "excuse you, Davenport, this is a piece of art."
Chase sighed, rubbing his face. The Elite Force had been given a full day off superhero work. Bree took Skylar to get their nails done, Oliver was spending the day with his dad, who was visiting from the UK, and that meant Chase was stuck with Kaz. He was hoping they could get some work done- maybe an hour of extra training- but it seemed Kaz had other plans in mind.
"Did you have to?"
"Yes," Kaz stated, matter-of-factly.
Chase tried to give Kaz a stern are you kidding me look, but a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, "you're acting like a little kid."
Kaz put his hands on his hips, "hey. I am a rational, grown adult. There's nothing wrong with building a blanket fort!"
Before Chase could reply, Kaz took his wrist. "Besides-" he pulled Chase down, under the blanket dome he had constructed- "look at how comfy it is!"
Chase couldn't help but laugh at his boyfriends enthusiasm as they both plopped onto the cushions that lined the floor. "Yes, Kaz, it's very comfortable, but our couch is also comfortable, so why did you feel the need to make it?"
Kaz shoved Chase's shoulder, "ugh! You're impossible! It's called, 'for fun,' Chase- look it up." Kaz added, "don't actually look it up," when Chase raised his eyebrow in a way that meant he was about to spout out the definition of something.
The two bantered and joked around for the rest of the day and, by the end of it, Chase had to admit, blanket forts were pretty neat.
Ok, can I just point out that the Elite Force are still kids.
I mean, technically Bree's the oldest and, in LREF, she's only 17.
These are literally kids.
They do kid things.
There's probably been at least one time they were holding a press conference and one of the reporters mentioned something that made them all think of something funny and they immediately started cracking up, unable to control their laughter for a good three minutes.
They probably reference memes during team meetings and it would take a while for Donald or Douglas to get them back on track.
Bree saying "YEET" whenever she throws a proton ring.
Just... give me them being dumb kids who laugh and reference memes at times they really shouldn't, please and thank you.
hello this has been just kinda chilling in my drafts so if someone wants to use it they can (i still might, but idm if theres multiple version of it. tbh i probably wont ever finish it though)
otherwise, its just like a half-baked idea about the rats glitching around the heroes because i thought it could be n e a t, also yes its slightly unhinged i think i wrote it all in one sitting while sleep deprived
-=-
There’s an extended power outage, and with Douglas and Donald stuck at the academy with the hydraloop broken, Bree and Chase can’t sleep in their capsules.
They both pretend everything is fine and refuse to tell the rest of the team about their glitches (Granted, they hadn’t told them about their glitches before that either), Chase sleeps in Oliver’s bed (because Kaz’s is Disgusting), and Bree sleeps out on the couch.
(She wanted to sleep with Skylar, but xe convinced her it wasn’t a good idea with the whole spitting acid thing)
Then they start glitching and uhhhhh yeah. Also just because in canon Chase’s first visible glitch is his powers sputtering out and then him collapsing, he’s not as careful with using them.
He passes out at least twice (one of the times scaring the shit out of kaz and oliver because he starts glitching before Bree, Oliver caught him both times instead of LETTING HIM FALL TO THE GROUND. LEO. I’M LOOKING AT YOU.).
Obviously because i love him his glitches get worse though, including the random activation of both his laser bo and force field, exactly one time did his magnetism app get stuck on and it lasted an hour and he was quarantined to his capsule and spent the entire time more-or-less suctioned to the floor
Bree, unlike back when they got their new lab, has more powers now- so her vocal manipulation, super speed and invisibility are all goofing. Chase and Skylar are the only ones who can find her 50% of the time by listening for her breathing, but since Chase is also glitching they’ve kinda separated themselves from each other since her vocal manipulation grates on his bionic hearing
ok i thought of this when I woke up at 3am because of allergies so I was probably only half awake but: Skylar getting tired of Kaz and Chase's annoying little disagreements, so forces them to dance with each other. Something about "being in sync now will help you be in sync irl"
2/2: then ofc chase and kaz are like "psh fine." and do what she says cuz she's Skylar. But then they catch Feels.
---
oh my gosh, I love this
• Chase and Kaz fought about everything
• movies, songs, food, training, phones, books, the messiness within the penthouse, the level of sarcasm that is used during team meetings, memes- it got very out of hand
• Skylar was sick of it
• she told both of them to meet her in the basement one day, and she didn't tell them what they were gonna do, but they did as she said because Skylar lowkey terrifies both of them
• when Kaz and Chase got there, they saw that Skylar had set up a speaker and was connecting it to her phone
• obviously they were like "what's going on??"
• and Skylar gave them the excuse that dancing together would make them be more comfortable working together, on missions and in general, and the whole team would benefit from them getting more in tuned to one another, and it was their responsibility to become more in sync
• and that was a load off bullshit, because Skylar was really just tired of the two being oblivious to their feelings for one another, and this was the only think she could think of doing that would force them to confront their massive crushes for one another head on
• she basically put on some music and was like "kay, y'all have fun with that, imma head out"
• "you're not staying??"
• "lol no, I'm going to get a smoothie"
• once Skylar left, Chase and Kaz kinda debated just not even doing anything, but they really didn't want to run that risk of Skylar figuring out they didn't do as she told them to
• and, hey, it's basically just training, how awkward could it be?
• the answer is very awkward
• "are we supposed to... ballroom dance? Like, tango?"
• "I'm not tangoing with you"
• "so cha-cha?"
• "definitely not"
• "cha-cha slide?"
• "wha- no"
• "waltz?"
• "over my dead body"
• they probably argued about what to do for fifteen minutes but, in their defense, there are many forms of dance to choose from and none of them sounded very appealing to Chase
• finally, Kaz got sick of Chase being such a pain so he dragged Chase up from his seat to the middle of the cleared floor
• "look, Skylar's gonna be back any minute, and if we aren't dancing when she returns she'll never let us hear the end of it, so let's just dance, for fucks sake!"
• Chase huffed, but didn't argue (for once in his life)
• right away, it became very apparent to Kaz that Chase was not a dancer
• Kaz wasn't either, but he at least had some dancing skills and could manage not stepping on his partner's toes every two seconds
• but honestly... it was kinda cute to Kaz when Chase stammered out an apology after tripping or something like that
• Chase was mainly just aware of how close he was to Kaz, and how Kaz had his hand on Chase's waist, and how his other hand was holding Chase's hand, and how close he was to Kaz-
• it was kind of distracting
• after a bit, Skylar was back in the basement, smoothie in hand, and was pleased to see the boys attempt dancing
• and, a few days later, she was very pleased when Kaz ran into her room, screeching "I HAVE A PROBLEM," and asked her for help on asking Chase out
