A Third of the Way There

Officially, I am a third of the way done with my Master's degree!! OMG. I'm 33% of the way there to calling myself a Master of Nutrition for Global Health.

This is a milestone in my personal life. For the first time in 23 years, I spent 3.5 months learning to live by myself, how to navigate adulthood, and so much more.

My takeaway from all of this. I feel that the biggest fear is actually getting started. Those anxious thoughts of Can I do it? how will I do it? If anyone is reading this and feeling the same way, take it from someone who has no real-life skills, you can do it.

Also on the last day of my last class of the first term, I lost my lunchbox on the bus. So... a great way to end the term!

Some notes from my visit to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It was so interesting, and helped me to figure out what direction I wanted my career to go. It was honestly fascinating, and the best day.

Thoughts of the Present and Future

Approximately 7,581 km lies between Vancouver and London. That’s how far away I am from family, friends, and my memories. But the amazing thing is I am making new memories and new opportunities here.

As I walk the steps towards LSHTM, the steps towards the ethnic supermarkets and grocery stores on Green Street. I can’t help but think was there anyone else like me walking these steps before me? Surely there has been. People dreaming, hoping, and wishing. For better futures and brighter futures. I can’t help but think of them. What were they thinking? What were they going through? Were they as scared and uncertain as I was? But equally as optimistic and exhilarated as I am of potential possibilities? I don’t know what the future will hold.

The world is collapsing, chaotic, and in shambles. But these past few months I have seen such great unity, strength, and solidarity among people across the world. I want to be a part of it.

Letter of Acceptance

2 am, Jan 18th 2018 tiba-tiba gue kebangun, dan gak tau kenapa refleks aja gitu buka email di hp. Tiba-tiba ada email kemaren sore yang isinya...

“Dear Shabrina Putri

We are delighted to make you a conditional offer to the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Details of academic and non-academic conditions that you will need to satisfy are outlined in the attached Offer of Admission..” 

WHOA! Ini serius?? Gue kucek-kucek mata, kali aja mimpi. Alhamdulillah beneran.. gue langsung gemeteran pegang hp dan bangun, wudhu, dan sholat tahajud. Bulan Desember lalu gue emang iseng coba apply secara online langsung ke websitenya. Untuk daftar online gak terlalu susah. Biasanya kita diminta upload dokumen persyaratan, english proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL), motivation letter, dan references. Yang agak susah itu bagian ngisi reference. Kita diminta isi data pemberi rekomendasi dan emailnya. Nanti dari univ nya bakalan kirim link isian rekomendasi ke email referee-nya. Jadi, jauh-jauh hari sebelumnya kita harus ngasih tau ke pemberi rekomedasi kita bahwa akan ada email yang masuk dari univ yang kita daftar. Kadang kita suka merasa sungkan untuk ngingetin lagi kalo referencenya belom diisi. Tapi alhamdulillah, referee gue ini baik bangetttt.. 

Oh iya, mau ngebahas sedikit tentang reference ini. Biasanya diminta academic referee, bisa dosen, dekan, pembimbing skripsi, pembimbing akademik yang tau nilai kamu atau kenal kamu selama kuliah, atau dosen jurusan yang mau kamu daftar. Beberapa tips untuk mendapatkan rekomendasi: menjalin komunikasi dari pemberi rekomendasi sejak jauh-jauh hari deadline pendaftaran. Apalagi kalo kita udah lama lulus dari kampus dan biasanya dosen suka lupa sama mahasiswa saking banyaknya. Kalo kita jauh dari kampus, bisa kontak via email atau sms dulu. Lebih bagus lagi kalo ketemu langsung ke kampus. Bawa leaflet uni yg kamu mau daftar, dan juga motivation letter. Seenggaknya itu nunjukin kamu niat. Dan siapa tau dosennya bisa ngasih saran dan pertimbangan. Hehehe.. Itu menurut saya sih, tiap dosen bisa berbeda-beda. Oh iya, usahain banget jangan dadakan. Karena sifatnya kita yang butuh. Kalo dia mah terserah mau ngasih atau nggak. Biasanya pemberi rekomendasi itu adalah orang penting atau sibuk. Kalo ternyata tiba-tiba lagi cuti atau ke luar kota, kan kita sendiri yang repot. Untuk yang udah kerja, bisa juga kita minta rekomendasi ke atasan/manajer/supervisor di tempat kerja. Prinsipnya sama: jangan dadakan, dan ingetin dengan sopan dan halus kalo linknya udah dikirim ke email tapi sama yang bersangkutan belum diisi rekomendasinya. Yah namanya sibuk, kadang lupa cek email kalo nggak diingetin. 

Next, seneng gitu udah dapet LoA? Jawabannya BELUM. Di tulisan sebelumnya saya udah sempet membahas LoA. Ada yang Conditional dan Unconditional. Nah kalo yang saya dapet ini, LoA Conditional, masih ada syarat yang harus dipenuhi sebelum bener-bener diterima di kampus. Syarat yang harus saya penuhi untuk bisa keterima di London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine adalah IJAZAH. Dan ternyata setelah dibaca baik-baik, nggak se-simple upload ijazah. Tapi mereka minta dikirimin ORIGINAL. Nah kan bingung. Mereka nggak terima copy atau legalisir, hanya yang original. Menurut gue itu too risky. Gimana kalo pas dikirim ijazah saya hilang atau tenggelam di samudra pacific? Gak akan bisa minta ijazah lagi. Toh saya juga masih menunggu pengumuman beasiswa. Untungnya kita bisa accept offer nya dulu. Yang penting, save your seat! Untuk syaratnya masih ditungguin sampe akhir juli, sambil nunggu pengumuman. 

Saya belum bisa bernafas lega. Karena apalah arti LoA unconditional kalo beasiswanya belum dapat. Yang penting usahanya udah, kita serahkan semua kepada Allah SWT. Yakin kita dikasih skenario yang paling baik olehNya.
