sky high au; louis has fire powers, harry as plant/earth powers

Harry tries to focus on reading his menu, but his eyes wander of their own accord, finding Louis' familiar figure a few tables down. He can see his lips moving as he talks to the family that are seated in the round booth, but that's not what Harry's paying attention to. 

Louis is smiling. It's a small, server smile, but a smile nonetheless. It softens his face and his eyes, making him even more beautiful than he already is. There's a flower tucked behind his ear – a slightly wilted daisy. Harry can't stop himself from looking, baffled by the sight. It had never occurred to him until now that he's never seen Louis smile before. He wonders if anyone has. 

Niall's past words return to him then. His warnings and all the rumors. However, the more Harry sees of Louis Tomlinson, the less he's swayed by those whispered cautions of danger. He's intrigued by him, he realizes. Everyone he's talked to seems to think they've gotten Louis figured out, but in reality, he's a mystery to them all. It makes Harry wonder again if someone so timid and gentle on the outside could be capable of what they claim he's done. 

He stares blankly at the page, scripted words blurring in his vision. His penchant for risky decisions is what continues to get him in trouble, both this morning and time after time in the past, but that doesn't stop him from making another one then and there.

hi zanni!!! 

ahhh omg you picked one of my favs!! a7 is my sky high au - er, sky college au because i’m aging them up!! the title i have for it is let the flames grow and it’s one of my top priorities!! also in case anyone’s seen the movies: the villain is going to be different, i promise!!! dhjdkd

basically, it’s harry’s pov and he’s fresh at college in the second semester because his powers (plant powers 🌱) presented much later than they usually do for supernaturals (haven’t come up for a word for them yet so we’ll go with that for now). he befriends niall and liam and sets out learning how to be a hero. as time passes, he begins hearing rumors about a certain sophomore named louis tomlinson who has fire powers... 

ft. misunderstood soft louis, creatives uses for vines (hehe), and a lot of scheming at the cafe where (human) zayn works and thinks those four who always show up and take the table in the back are pretty odd. 

here’s a snippet i’ve shared before: 

“No, no, you should stay away from him,” Niall whispers.

“Why?” Harry asks, peering back over his shoulder to eye the stranger curiously. He’s petite, dressed in a worn oversized sweater that slips down to expose a golden sliver of skin, fingers curled into his sleeves and head ducked low. “He looks harmless.”

“He’s not,” Niall says. “Believe me.”

Harry hears the nervous tinge to Niall’s voice and he reluctantly drags his gaze away from the boy to meet his uneasy eyes. “What’s up with him?”

“Fire. That’s his gift,” Niall murmurs, glancing back behind him as if he’s afraid to be heard. “I heard he got into a fight with his ex-boyfriend and burned him so badly that he can’t register anything in his hands anymore. It’s all numb.”

“Jesus,” Harry whispers, a grimace pulling at his lips as his eyes drop to his own hands.

Niall bites his lip. “His name is Louis Tomlinson.”

current wc: less than 1k but the outline is pretty fleshed out and i’m excited to get to work on it seriously after my break!!! the estimated wc is around 40k!!

goal for release: definitely early 2021! i’d love to get it out in april 14th in specific because that’s the day my friend, jem, asked my friend, hayley, if i could write this prompt that she tweeted, neither of us realizing we’d end up such good friends :)
