The baby was coming soon and the nursery still wasn’t ready. Everything was happening so fast that they’d forgotten. Tommy had went out to get all the necessities the baby needed. His old office was being renovated into the nursery. The walls were stale and boring so they had dedicated the day to painting the walls before putting the furniture in. It was hard to focus on the objective at hand when Lucas decided he wanted to help. The doctor had said the baby could come any day and rest was what he needed most. Lucas, being tired of lying in bed all day, wanted to help. Tommy couldn’t talk him out of it. He picked up a brush and got to work before Tommy could even say anything.
Tommy was working on the center wall while Lucas was working on the right side. Lucas suddenly dropped the brush and clutched his large abdomen.
“Braxton Hicks?” Tommy asked, turning to look at him.
Lucas exhaled loudly as the pain seemingly eased. “Yeah, they’ve been getting bad lately. I’m going to take a break.”
“Yeah, you do that.” Tommy dipped the brush in the paint can. “Call me if anything happens.”
“Nothing will happen,” Lucas remarked on the way out of the unfinished room.
Not even five minutes after he started back to painting there was a call coming from the living room. Tommy dropped the brush on the ground and ran to Lucas. He found him lying on the couch, pain written on his face.
“What’s the matter?” Tommy grabbed his hand.
Lucas winced as he tried to get a word out. “The baby…my water broke.”
Tommy looked down at the crotch of his pants. There was a darkened spot in between his legs. It was happening.
“Can you walk?” Concern laced his voice.
“Yeah, I think so. The pain isn’t that bad yet.” Lucas lifted himself up to a seated position.
Tommy helped him stand. Lucas shifted most of his weight onto him as they walked to the car. He lowered him down into the seat, shutting the door after making sure he was fully in. As he backed out of the driveway, a small smile crept onto his face at the thought that when they return, they’ll have their baby with them.
“How you’re holding up?” Tommy briefly turned to look at him, seeing him slouched in the seat.
“I’m doing okay.” Lucas breathed out a strangled breath.
Tommy put a little bit more pressure on the gas pedal, picking up the speed slightly. Even though he appeared to keeping it together, he felt like he was going to pass out. He hadn’t taken a decent breath ever since Lucas told him that he was in labor and his heart was beating two times faster than its normal rate. The fact that they were going to meet their daughter or son after so long of waiting kept him grounded.
The reflex of his foot smashing on the brake to avoid hitting the back of the car in front of them ripped him out of his head. Sounds of cars honking and angry curses echoed around them. It was a traffic jam. Tommy got out of the car to get a better look at what could be the cause. Several blue lights from police cars and the red lights of an ambulance could be seen many feet ahead of the backed up lanes, a car accident most likely.
“Looks like we’re going to be here for a while,” Tommy grumbled, craving a cigarette.
“Tommy, this baby doesn’t have a while,” Lucas cried, unbuttoning his pants. “You’re going to have to deliver the baby.”
“I don’t know a single thing about delivering a baby.” Tommy held onto Lucas’s trembling hand. “I-I can run up there and get a paramedic real quick.”
“Tommy—ah—I can’t hold this baby in any longer, even for that.”
Tommy saw the desperation on his face. There were no workarounds. He got out of the car and hurried to the passenger side. Lucas tugged down his pants. The baby was starting to crown. Tommy readied his hands.
“Push on three. One…two…THREE!” Tommy counted.
Lucas screamed, cursed, and cried. Tommy didn’t have to do much of anything, except keep his hands steady, preparing for the grand entrance of their baby in the passenger seat of his car. The baby’s head was already out with that one push. He held his hands around the head as support.
“Tommy get it out, please.” Lucas screamed, a single tear of pain rushing down his cheek and dripping off his chin.
Tommy spoke softly, “You’re doing so good. Just a couple of more pushes and the baby’ll be out. One…two…three, push!”
Lucas took in a deep breath and pushed, bringing his chin to his chest. More of the body came out into his hands. Tommy looked into Lucas’s squinted blue eyes and nodded, giving him the okay to push again. He called out Tommy’s name as his body worked extra hard. At the release of a single breath, a new sound filled the tense air of the car. A squirming baby wailed loudly in Tommy’s hand.
“We have a son, Luke.” Tommy lifted the baby up, carefully placing him in Lucas’s arms.
“Hey, baby boy,” Lucas whispered to the newly born child.
When the chaos of the last 40 minutes cooled down, Tommy helped Lucas position himself back into seat correctly. The traffic was moving very slowly. Now that the baby was born, Tommy could get the attention of the paramedics. He made sure Lucas would be okay if left alone for a bit and ran to the scene ahead of them. The police officers were still investigating the scene while another was directing the long line of cars as only one lane was opened.
He saw the wreckage. The car didn’t even look like a car anymore . It was just a crumpled up metal ball. A semi was parked on the closed lane. The front of it was completely destroyed.
“Only officers and medical personnel, sir. Go back to your car,” the officer demanded, holding him back from walking any further.
“I need some medical assistance. My boyfriend just had a baby in our car,” Tommy stated.
The officer went to one of the paramedics, who then disappeared into the ambulance.
“We’ll have another ambulance dispatched here as soon as possible. Now go back to your boyfriend and wait for us to come get you,” the officer explained.
“Thanks so much, sir.” Tommy shook his head.
“No problem, son.” Tommy started to walk away. “And congratulations on your kid. Is this your first child?”
“Yes, sir, it is.” He nodded.
The officer smiled and chuckled. “First child born in a traffic jam. Sorry that we kept you from getting to the hospital. These things kinda happen randomly and out of our control.”
“No, I understand. I’m just happy my boyfriend and baby are safe.”
They made it to the hospital almost an hour after their son was born. Lucas was settled down in a hospital bed, holding their son, Arlo. Tommy sat next to him, brushing Arlo’s black hair gently with the tip of his index finger. He loved him so much and already couldn’t imagine his life without him in it. The feeling of fatherhood was a feeling he enjoyed very much.
The nurse walking in tore their eyes away from their son for the first since they got there.
“Sorry for interrupting you, but you have a visitor.”
The officer from earlier walked through door from behind the nurse. He was carrying a bouquet of flowers and a tiny gift bag.
“Just wanted to drop this gift off to pay for the troubles of having wait in traffic during your whole ordeal.” The officer, who introduced himself as Officer Vianni, set the bouquet on a nearby table and handed Tommy the gift bag.
Tommy peeked into the bag. It was a baby bonnet. He carefully put it on Arlo’s head. Tommy stood and hugged the officer.
“Thank you so much.” Tommy pulled away from the hug.
“Sir, you really didn’t have to do this.” Lucas chimed in.
“I wanted to do this. Give little—uh”
“We’ve named him Arlo,” Tommy told.
“Give little Arlo a good life.”
The officer tipped his hat before he left. Tommy kissed Lucas and Arlo’s foreheads. Their son’s birth didn’t go like they planned, but Tommy couldn’t be happier. He had his son and his boyfriend. His life was complete.
maybe Lucas Bertone and Sergio have actually been friends (in DE Lucas is less important and looks younger, but still) since they both love nice cars, and they don’t know about each other’s involvement in the race car destruction lmao. and Sergio knows many rich posh people whom he doesn’t like - and who own nice cars - so he occasionally intentionally drops some info about their cars. that’s why (in the OG at least, I don’t remember how much he says and does in DE) Lucas always knows where the most beautiful cars are parked around the city and can give those tips to Tommy. Sergio is more than happy to know that the people whom he doesn’t like lose their cars
