the prompts
“do you think we’re meant to be?” yukhei whispered, your fingers grazing the borders of his shirt, brushing his skin softly from time to time.
“yukhei” you chuckled, averting your gaze from the ceiling to look up at him.
“what? i’m serious”
you didn’t know how to identify if you were meant to be with someone. but if the title stood for someone who made your feelings sound just like a song, and he listened as if he had been waiting years to hear it on the radio, then yukhei was the one.
“y/n, i’m home!” a voice yelled from the door and you and your boyfriend sprang out of bed.
yukhei put on his shoes at warp speed while you shouted back to your brother, checking the door so he wouldn’t come in.
“wait, your sweatshirt” you handed over the fabric to the boy being halfway out of the window.
“take it to school with you tomorrow. you’re always cold” he winked before disappearing, your brother entering the room with perfect timing.
“hi, how did it go?” you asked almost out of breath.
“they hired me, i’ll start working next tuesday”
“that’s great!” you hugged xiaojun, knowing how hard he had tried to get a job to pay for his dream college.
“yeah” he exhaled in relief. his eyebrows furrowed when he caught sight of your chair, pointing at it. “is that yukhei’s hoodie?” he mentioned his best friend’s name.
“what?” you said quickly, snapping your head in that direction. “no, no. that’s mine”
“i’ve never seen it”
“i only recently bought it” he nodded, a bit unconvincingly.
xiaojun liked yukhei. they were best friends after all, but what he didn’t really like was you around the boy. he had warned you about him, and his personality defined by being a party animal and breaking too many people’s hearts. but he never showed that side around you, it was safe for you to fall for him.
still, although you trusted yukhei, you kept your guard up. you would never admit it, but you noticed the teachers giving you the evil eye when he distracted you during classes. they knew you took the studies seriously, and you didn't want that reputation being judged accordingly to yukhei's rowdy one. you also never told your brother about you two.
the next day, you sat against a tree with yukhei during a free period. you were telling him about a new hair dye you wanted to buy, when you started shivering, the wind gaining force.
“you're cold” he stated. “why didn't you wear it? my sweatshirt?”
you couldn't look him in the eye.
“i didn't think it would be this chilly”
yukhei got closer to you, motioning to wrap his arms around you to try and pass on his warmth, when one of your teachers passed by, making you flinch.
he sighed, moving away. when the woman left your line of vision, yukhei was facing towards the other direction. you watched him for a moment, but he didn't glance back.
“i'm sorry”
at this moment it was you who tried bringing your body closer to his stiff one.
“why do you care so much about what people think?” you weren't expecting the question, your throat going dry. “i know you aren't wearing my clothes because you don't want people to find out about us”
“xiaojun asked me about the hoodie”
“and did you tell him the truth?” his eyes pierced through yours. he nodded understandingly at your silence. “look, it's not my fault that he, and everyone, have that heartbreaker, bad boy image of me. sure, i dated quite a few times. but the relationships didn't work out, and it wasn't on me” he raised his hands. you rememebered him explaining he simply didn't click with his past partners. “and for that matter, xiaojun parties with me all the time, if that bothers him so much. and he's had his love dramas as well. but you'll never judge your brother like you do with me, won't you?”
his words stang as if a swarm of bees had bitten all bare parts of your flesh. because you knew he was right. it wasn’t fair, how you believed everyone’s views even when yukhei made an effort to prove you they were wrong.
“you’re right” you said, trying to organize the rest of your thoughts, but he was faster.
“are you scared i’ll hurt you? is that it?”
“i, i don’t know” your tone was honest, realizing that maybe, deep down, you were scared everyone was right about yukhei all along. “i don’t want people to say they told me so”
“they won’t” he held your hands firmly. they were burning, yours were cold. “can you let me show you that? let's figure it out ourselves, just the two of us? no need for anyone else”
you nodded, your muscles relaxing in yukhei’s touch. if being meant to be with someone stood for the one who took the winter from you and replaced it with fresh fruit and summer feelings, then yukhei was that.
“now, can i give you my sweater or would you rather freeze to death?”
you laughed loudly, the boy taking off the cloth and putting it over your head.
“there, my cute baby”
“you know i love it when you call me that”
the jumper hung loosely on you, but it was warm. and it smelled like him. and if wanting to create a incense with a person's aroma signified you were meant to be, then yukhei was the one.
