OH LOVEY MAY I HAVE A READING?
Fox friend, cactus-flower, you may have whatever you wish. I was almost done shuffling for you when I felt compelled to turn a card over from the middle. It was Justice, and it has a lot of the colors that were blooming in my mind as I asked about you. This card, with its brass-voiced and melancholy angel, watches over you during this reading. No amount of pain or distraction can keep it from its task, and its certainty is always greater than its suffering.

Roots: The Star
Such an emotive Star. She gives hope and endurance, a kindly push along your way. Her smile seems so much wider than the image allows. Usually, this card fills me with serenity, but right now it’s exciting, like the thrill of a growing storm. Autumn is going to be heady for you, I can tell, but the Star’s presence means that it’s not dangerous, but good. Enveloping, maybe, but definitely not bad.
Stem: Four of Cups
The sullen disenchantment of the youth in this card is like grit in my teeth. He’s not satisfied with what he has, and he’s missed out on something he really wants, so he rejects what’s offered in its place. It seems like he’s not happy with his place in the world. It’s like a single setback has made the whole world seem less lustrous and every other part of your life seem more backward. Set upon by the world, it seems, that lingering, angering letdown is the strongest thing coming through from last season.
First Branch: Four of Wands
Three women prepare a bath while a celebration builds behind them. They have an unspoken companionship that doesn’t dim when they start to gossip, and it’s giving me all kinds of philosophical tinglings. It’s an interesting notion, to have people in a supposedly inferior position care so little about their place in the world. They contribute, and they’re happy to, but their sense of community doesn’t automatically signify devotion and obeisance. It’s individuality instead of humility. They simply gauge themselves according to a different scale, even as they appear to fit in to the norm. This is an interesting opportunity for you, I think, and not one with which you’re unfamiliar. Far from it. It’s the association that’s unique and different, like befriending a legion of outcasts, except your life isn’t a movie from the late eighties.
Second Branch: Three of Wands
A certain eagerness and surety is coming in waves off of this card. Whatever new project the Three of Wands signifies, it’s one well within your capabilities and suited to your ambitions. If it’s a journey, it will be a fruitful one. I think you can look forward to an opportunity that will make the displeasure of the Four of Cups seem less potent, at least in some respects.
A Broken Branch: Queen of Wands
“Beware a redheaded woman” would be inaccurate, but the ominousness of saying it is very tempting. A passionate, sensual person, governed by a mercurial temper that can turn a genial exchange icy in an instant. It’s the temper that you have to be ‘ware of. Admittedly, this feels more like a third party to me. Dancing on eggshells could be just as damaging as ignoring the warnings altogether. Matching wills with someone like this could distract from other things you’re meant to do this autumn, but it may be inevitable.
First Leaf: Death
This card is so restful. Death covers a lady in gentle sleep, and little angels touch her face in tender benediction. This is a mellow slide into another state of being. The simplicity and genuineness of the Four of Wands can release you from a rut you might have been in. Maybe a new sort of friendship opens your eyes, maybe a humbling experience lifts you up. It seems like the equal enjoyment of work and companionship allows you to rise out of the murk of worldly concerns and approach your life a little differently.
Second Leaf: Knight of Coins
This Knight is so great, so steadfast and enduring. I really like the innocent nobility he carries. It’s genuine virtue without a burden of ego. The commitment in the Three of Wands enhances these qualities in you, and it’s not hard to conclude that there will be rewards beyond that. You gain direction and more strength to stand on your own.
It feels like everyday concerns are spilling over into other aspects of your life. The steps you’ll be able to take this autumn can start to unpack some of that for you, but it seems to require that you discard some of the stubborn frustration that has been lingering. Justice casting her shadow across this whole reading helps ensure that your actions will be right ones, and the Star brightens your hopelessness. I wish you luck with it, love.
