Lucy Sutcliffe’s New Video Is Totally Inspiring!

Lucy Sutcliffe is one of the most popular lesbian YouTubers with more than 42,000 subscribers and more than 65,000 followers on Instagram. Her 2012 book “Girl ❤️ Girl” captured readers with its uplifting story of how Lucy struggled to accept her sexuality before coming out at age 17 and then moving to the United States in 2011 to be with her American girlfriend, Kaelyn Petras. Everybody could relate to her message: "You are not alone ... it gets better."

We all thought Kaelyn and Lucy were forever, and we were crushed when they announced they were breaking up in September 2016 (in a video that got more than 1.2 million views). All of us who were inspired by their love story and followed them on Tumblr (@kaeepet and @lucyelizabeth) wondered what life would be like after they broke up. In May 2017, Lucy found a new girlfriend, Kim, and they’ve been together ever since. 

Lucy released a video this week called “It’s Time to Reset” about making new beginnings and it is guaranteed to make you feel inspired!

"The happy memories are still there. They meant a lot to me then and they still do, even now. Everyone you meet in life teaches you something. ... Even if you go to bed at night regretting something, feeling like you didn't do enough with your day, didn't achieve what you wanted to, didn't do what you wanted to, you can try again tomorrow. ... You can reset whenever you like. So what are you waiting for?"

Lucy says she is amazed by the positive reaction from fans: “Really feeling the love from this... what an incredible response. Thank you so much, guys. I hope you all find the courage to reset whenever you feel you need it.“

Book Review #4

Some Stats: first published in 2016, ISBN: 978-1407-15415-2, 273 pages in the paperback edition (minus Q&A and Foreword). 47 very short chapters, first person omniscient narrator, written in past tense. Style is standard with remarkably simple syntax, almost no dialogue. Took me a little over two hours to get through, I’d estimate about four for the average to slow reader. 

Synopsis: The book is a memoir, the author tells us the story of her life from primary school to after university. 

Personal Opinion: To be honest I expected something totally different when buying this. For one, the target audience, judging by style, is girls around twelve to fifteen who are questioning their sexuality. I expected something written for wlw around sixteen to twenty who are relatively sure in their sexuality, something written more like a queer story and less like a reassurance that liking girls is ok. But that’s what it is: the whole message of the book is that it’s ok to be gay, and it’s written in a way that’s easy to understand and read. Not something I’d have bought now if I had known, but definitely something I wished I’d had when I was about fourteen. 

Critique: The story seems to be a bit idealised, and by that I mean that some issues like e.g. bullying are resolved without the author really discussing how. But, as mentioned, the No. 1 purpose of the book is to send a positive message to young girls who are attracted to girls, and not to show the effects of bullying etc., so I don’t think it should be that big an issue. 

Would I recommend this book? If yes to whom? If no why? Yes, I would recommend this book to any young sapphic girl looking for a bit of reassurance. Alternatively, if you are a parent/caregiver or in any way involved with a young gay girl and looking for something that’ll “explain” the gay and/or help you understand or support her better, this book is a good place to start.

Do not read this book if...

...You are looking for something that doesn’t revolve solely around being gay and learning to accept it.

...You are looking for a “grownup” story about being gay.

...You are looking for something that really deals with homophobia, bulling and other problems people face when coming out.
