So I found a fic that I wrote back in February so enjoy

He shouldn’t have let that happen. He’s the soldier,he should have been the one to kill Jesse James. Not in some sick sort of “I wanted to do it” way but simply because Lucy shouldn’t have had to be the one to do it. She shouldn’t have to carry that burden. Not for the first time he curses Rittenhouse out in his mind for putting her in this situation. He also blames himself for the broken, distant, and sad expression on her face as she stands unmoving next to the tree quite possibly in a state of shock. Completely forgetting about Jess and ignoring the possibility of saving her he makes his way over to Lucy because she is the one that needs him or at least someone and what he won’t admit to himself is that he needs her to be okay and his need for her wellbeing is slowly but surely outweighing his want to have his wife back(he would admit that to himself later on after being enveloped in a hug from Lucy after attempting to save Jess when he realized it had been her embrace he was longing for rather than Jess’).

“Hey” he says coming up from behind her. She’d been standing there for ten minutes now while he’d gotten an earful from Bass Reeves. She nearly jumps out of her skin and turns to him tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Oh, hi I didn’t hear you com-“ she doesn’t finish her sentence because he pulls her flush against him in a hug. She makes a noise of surprise but pulls him closer rests her head on his chest and starts sobbing. Wyatt holds on tighter and runs a hand through her hair.

“I don’t know what’s come over me” she chokes out.

“Well in this week alone you’ve gone through quite a lot. It was bound to come out at some point.”

“I can’t believe I did that. I- I shot Jesse James of all people. Wyatt I killed someone” Lucy holds on tighter as a new round of sobs start.

“I should have been the one to do it Luce, not you-“

“No! Wyatt no. I couldn’t let you do it”

“What are you talking about?”

“I know that’s your job but I was afraid that if you had been the one to kill Jesse James it would have been the metaphorical step over the line for you and I know you Wyatt that would have haunted you and I couldn’t let you cross that line or carry that burden-“

“Hey hey it’s okay.” He kisses the top of her head.

Saving Jess can wait. Lucy is the one with him in the here and now(there and then?). Either way she was there with him and needed him and was his priority. So he just holds on tighter and basks in the comfort she provides. He’s slowly falling and he knows that there’s no stopping it.
