small fun fact: Ludian (lüüdikiel', the small Finnic language of easternmost Karelia) and Lydian (the 1st millennium BCE Anatolian language) might not be similar by accident, but indeed cognate — the first comes certainly (though Russian / Old East Slavic люди) and the latter possibly from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₁lewdʰ- 'people'
A few Finnish—Ludian false friends
Between most neighboring varieties of Finnic languages, knowledge of one of them will most of the time allow predicting what any given word in another means. Across larger distances in the dialect continuum surprizes will be coming up a bit more frequently. Between Finnish and Ludian, both belonging in the Northern Finnic group, these are still not as simple to find as between e.g. Finnish and Estonian. But here’s some examples anyway, mostly native, that I’ve picked up so far:
Fi. alainen (dialectal) ‘underwear’ — Lu. aɫaińe ‘woollen mitten’
Fi. ali ‘under (lative)’ — Lu. aľi ‘or’ (← Russian али)
Fi. alusta ‘platform’ — Lu. aɫustə ‘lining in clothing’
Fi. arki ‘workday’ — Lu. aŕg ‘lent’ (but Lu. aŕkpäiv ‘workday’)
Fi. armoton ‘merciless’ — Lu. armotoińə ‘orphan’
Fi. asua ‘to live’ — Lu. azuda ‘to do’
Fi. ehta ‘proper’ (← Swedish äkta) — Lu. ehtə ‘evening’ (but Fi. ehtoo ‘evening’)
Fi. elo ‘life’ — Lu. eɫo ‘property, possessions’ (but Lu. eɫos ‘life’)
Fi. hajottaa ‘to break smth’ — Lu. hajotada ‘to lose smth’
Fi. hapata ‘to go sour’ — Lu. hapata ‘to rot’
Fi. hautoa ‘to keep smth warm, roost’ — Lu. haudoda ‘to stew smth’
Fi. hautua ‘to stew’ — Lu. haududa ‘to keep smth warm’
Fi. heimokunta ‘tribal confederation’ — Lu. heimokund ‘(extended) family’
Fi. helakka ‘bright (of color)’ — Lu. heľak ‘bright (of sound)’
Fi. hengästyä ‘to become out of breath’ — Lu. hengästüdä ‘to take a deep breath’
Fi. hillo ‘jam’ — Lu. hiɫɫo ‘cloudberry’ (but Fi. hilla ‘cloudberry’)
Fi. hirnua ‘to neigh’ — Lu. hirnuda ‘to snore’ (but Lu. hirnakoida ‘to neigh’)
Fi. juro ‘grumpy’ — Lu. ďuro ‘stripe’
Fi. jälkimmäinen ‘latter, last-mentioned’ — Lu. ďälgimäińe ‘last’
semirandom Finno-Ugric word of the day —
Ludian ahavᵘoiťš́enzᵘoittada /ˈɑhɑˌʋu͡ojt͡ɕenˌzu͡ojtːɑdɑ/ ‘to air-dry outside’: a derivative from ahav ‘dry wind’ that seems to be showing off how many different causative suffixes you can cram in one word.
