Agony.
It had been days, upon days… upon days, and time seemed to move slowly or hold still altogether while fighting the very war against the Legion and upon their own planet. And still… no sign of victory was in his eyes. Those glowing lichfire orbs rose up to stare out and upon the cracked land as he sat perched upon a hill-like spire within the camp. A place he had come to find when he needed that time to himself, a time to think and ponder, and especially put some space between himself and the rest of the troops. He did not wish for them to see what he was deep down, and with how on-edge he had been lately… he wished to not take it out on anyone who didn’t deserve it.
Hands held upon his lap, holding a pen and paper in them while still peering out and overlooking the camp. He sat as still as a statue, the words of the letter he had received from his beloved wife still running through his mind. They overtook the screams of the damned he oft listened to whether in idle moments or those he was heavy in battle. As he read those words, he heard her voice speak them… and it left everything in silence, her light piercing through the dark veil that was his mind. It was only getting harder and harder for him to be here, and that constant urge to want to leave was heavy upon him. He couldn’t abandon his troops still, nor his people… He would hate himself until the ends of his days, and sooner pass into the dark void before that would happen. He just lowered his head and pressed the paper to the ground and began to write to the beloved of his entire heart.
“My beloved Dove,
I apologize for the longest wait for this letter since your last one. I admit I have been terrible with writing one with the constant battles that we fight, and threats we have been dealt. And for that, I truly apologize for this letter to be so late.
It breaks my heart truly to be apart from you for longer than what we had thought, and still no sign of victory is in sight. We have been sent a threat by the demons that invaded the Vineyards… and still no sign. They are cowards, wishing us to turn and run for home. And truly… I wish I may leave right now. I cannot wait any longer for this to end. I want to leave. I want to come home to you, to our family…
I received a letter not only from you, but from Mace as well. My brother… said you were not doing well, and I worry so deeply that I cannot be there to help you. I had truly feared the worst when he sent that, and that you were very ill… Please, beloved, I know it is hard, but I do not wish for you to be sad. Or to worry for me. I will be home before you know it… whether successful or not, I will be there.
Eternal love,
Your Raven.”
Once he was finished writing upon the parchment, he moved his legs up to stand upon the hill and finally make his descent back down into the camp. Once in the command tent, he folded the letter up and set it into an envelope and sealed it with a blood red seal as he normally did. When the courier moved around to gather any letters that were to be sent, he came up to Thadwyl and waited for his own. A look of fear still in his eyes for the Knight, as he normally did. The Knight handed over the letter and off the man was running to head back to the ship. His heart was heavy, and his mind was dark, but, it would not stop him from doing what he thought he could to ensure he was going to be home. His mind would begin to form the screams and cries that he normally heard, and to it now, he simply felt numb as he readied for the coming plans that were to be issued. And still, it was getting harder and harder.
