Trafalgar D. Water Law; Law x Luffy? Plus Luffy Character Archetype Deep Dive
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
A/N: lol I feel like I’m always sharing my thoughts with you bestie it’s kinda wholesome to me for some reason. I’ll be making another post with the character archetypes of Luffy information as well as I think it deserves its own space disconnected to Law, it’ll be found somewhere on my master list I haven’t decided where yet lol
Luffy’s archetype deep dive can be found individually here
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
I feel like Law x Luffy wouldn’t actually work out but I think it’s a good reference to someone that Law needs as a significant other (if that makes sense)
Reasons why I don’t think anything would ever happen between the two of them:
They’re both captains of different pirate ships with different goals (this includes visions for the future and loyalty to their crew)
Luffy didn’t ever really view Law in any other type of way aside from being a friend imo
(Hc but Luffy is genuinely asexual to me)
Law isn’t in a position to be in a relationship with anyone healthily yet due to the fact he hasn’t fully processed his trauma from the genocide of Flevance and his time with the Donquixote Family and Corazón (my opinion)
Law most likely would not ever voice his feelings for Luffy if he had developed them
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Aside from that, I think Luffy is potentially a character archetype that Law would work best with romantically (not perfectly, obviously but this is just my two bits)
I feel as though of the 16 basic character archetypes, Luffy most closely resembles the hero, the innocent, the jester, (inadvertently the rebel), and the explorer
Even though I chose literally 5/16 of the archetypes trust he has their characteristics
(I’m gonna explain them and then at the end relate them back to what Law would be better off with so u can skip to the end/break point if u don’t wanna read the explanations lol) (also fair warning it’s long and the innocent and the Explorer are very similar imo)
In my understanding, the Hero Archetype is defined as:
A being with ‘mastery’ in a type of category that uses their skills to ‘leave their mark on the world’ through obtaining their ‘goal’.
The Hero is an ‘Ego’ archetype which can be understood to mean that the ‘hero’ has always had this sense of a ‘goal (to leave a mark on the world)’ and this ‘mastery’ is what they’re known for by others. (Ego represents the ‘conscious identity that interacts w the world’ so to speak)
The Hero Archetype is often renowned as being brave, hardworking, honest, and courageous and challenging to system and social norms
This can all be related back to Luffy regardless if he considers himself a hero or not because Luffy’s understanding of a hero is shaped by his experiences in the world of One Piece which includes his interactions with the Navy, Garp, the classism and poverty of the Goa Kingdom/Grey Terminal, Shanks, etc. and does not relate to the understanding of the Hero Archetype (yk?)
Luffy’s (speculated) goal is to become King of the Pirates to obtain ultimate freedom. And through this Luffy’s core of his goal is revealed as being free. - The status of King of the Pirates is and will always be a political thing in One Piece however because it doesn’t just symbolize freedom like it does to Luffy. It would be the physical embodiment of what pirates stand for in One Piece, which could be summed up as influential, powerful, world changing, and an independent entity of the world government (ykwim).
The mark on the world that being King of the Pirates would leave is so insane I can’t even articulate it. Just as the Four Emperors of the Sea are political and hold information, influence, power, etc and it’s a world altering event when one is dethroned or named, King of the Pirates multiplies that exponentially. Especially since King of the Pirates is above an Emperor so to speak. It’s supposed to be the peak that no one can reach because it would shift the dynamics of the world that have been in place for 800 years. This mark is also going to be a shift of good as we all know since the world government and their systems have long been established as the enemy or bad antagonist of One Piece so to speak
His mastery includes his awakening and control over his devil fruit and his friendships. His devil fruit is the human reincarnation of the Sun God, Nika: The Warrior of Liberation. As the story progresses we’ve seen Luffy gain control over his devil fruit and embody what it’s core attributes (freedom, liberation of oppressed people, dismantling of oppressive systems, etc) through his actions in Arlong Park/Cocoyashi Village, Alabasta, even Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, and the land of Wano. He leaves his mark which he is remembered by through these actions which are taken because of ‘mastery’ over his devil fruit. His ‘mastery’ of his companions are also integral to Luffy because Luffy never wants to be alone and most of his actions are taken because of his friends and their importance to him.
The Innocent Archetype can be understood as
A being with ‘safety’ elements to them that help them get closer to of ‘a sense of paradise/freedom’ through their goal of ‘happiness’
The Innocent is also an ‘Ego’ archetype which is how they interact with the world and how the world perceives them yk
The Innocent is often joyful, good, humble
While the Innocent is mostly considered a passive type of character, Luffy still exhibits these traits regardless of his directness/assertiveness/tendency to take action.
Luffy’s ‘safety’ elements he brings with him include his laughter, his smile, his acceptance, his emotional understanding/empathy, his loyalty, and his strength in my opinion. Luffy time and time again has presented his crew members with his personality and philosophy of life and made them feel safe enough to join his crew. It’s so interesting to see too
Through these ‘safety’ elements Luffy tries to bring his crew to ‘paradise’. Paradise can mean different things to different people. I think it means a lot in this sense: it means Nami’s dream of creating a map of the world, Sanji’s dream of finding the All Blue, Zoro’s dream of protecting the crew and becoming the world’s greatest swordsman, Usopp’s dream of being a brave warrior of the sea, Chopper’s dream of being the best doctor that can cure any ailment, Robin’s dream of carrying out the will of O’Hara, understanding the 100 year void and the poneglyphs, Franky’s dream of creating a ship that would be sailed by the King of the Pirates, Brooke’s dream of traveling the entirety of the Grand Line and reconnecting with Laboon, and Jimbei’s dream of creating a world where the human race and fishmen race coexist peacefully. Luffy’s own paradise is to become King of the Pirates. Their collective paradise is most likely to be together.
The ‘goal’ of the Innocent is to be happy. Through their paradise they achieve happiness. Luffy wants to be happy and surrounded by people he cares for, we see how important it is to him during his backstory and how much he was scared of being alone. I think this also ties into the Straw Hat Pirate’s collective paradise where they are all together because they would all be happy (to some extent).
The Jester Archetype can be understood as
A being that values ‘enjoyment’ because they are able to ‘connect with others’ through it
The Jester is a ‘Self’ type which can be understood to be directly related to how they engage with those around them in order to fulfill a sense of need they have within themselves that they’re (normally) aware of
The Jester is often characterized by their humor and comedic relief as well as subversive behavior that generally challenges social norms
Luffy values ‘enjoyment’ as seen in how he surrounds himself with people that make him laugh and know how to have fun (among other qualities). Through this bond of fun Luffy is able to connect with these people and create deep attachment both loyalty wise and friendship wise
Luffy creates his bonds with others and keep them around so he can be surrounded by love because Luffy has a fear of loneliness. He constantly works to protect his connections so he won’t be lonely again- this desire to not be lonely is Luffy’s need from within. This need stems from his largely sad childhood. His father abandoned him to lead the Revolutionary Army, his mother is unaccounted for, and his Grandfather appeared sporadically to force a career onto child Luffy and proceed to physically attack him when Luffy disagreed. His non blood family such as Ace and Sabo were initially unaccepting, until they weren’t. Yet even then Luffy endured physical pain at the hands of Blue Jam and Co. His brother Sabo leaves him and is presumed dead, and when he’s 14 a 17 year old Ace sets out leaving Luffy alone again.
Luffy is also aware of this, he admits that ‘being lonely hurts more than physical pain’ when he was just a little boy still in the Goa Kingdom. This self awareness Luffy has of his own fears, desires, and convictions allows him to seek out those that sate his need to ‘connect with others’. This is also why Luffy is so protective over his crew, it’s the reason he fought for Nami in Cocoyashi Village, Robin at Enies Lobby, and Sanji at Whole Cake Island.
Luffy is a stereotypical Jester at a flat character level as well because of his personality. Luffy is almost endlessly a ray of humor and good nature, yet he’s also one of the most dangerous pirates on the seas right now that is actively making moves against the world government.
The Jester leads into the Rebel archetype with Luffy because his desire for ‘a connection with others’ leads him to reject social norms and institutions of authority. This causes Luffy to also be a Rebel, however it is mostly self explanatory from there.
The Explorer Archetype can be understood as
A being that ‘yearns for paradise’ specifically through the means of obtaining ‘freedom’
The Explorer is a ‘Soul’ type which generally means that they search for completion of their own intrapersonal mission
The Explorer often finds freedom through means of adventure, leading them to be curious, adaptable, and ambitious
Luffy has stated numerous times he wishes for ‘freedom’, not just that he wishes for freedom but that he strives to achieve freedom in a specific form: freedom by being King of the Pirates
Being King of the Pirates gives Luffy his ‘freedom’ which in turn gives him his ‘ultimate paradise’. Luffy’s true dream which hasn’t yet been revealed to the audience is only achievable once he become King of the Pirates, and when he does he’ll be able to actually realize it.
Luffy demonstrates his ambitious nature with aspiring to be King of the Pirates, he’s so much resolve he’s been willing to die for his paradise this whole time. Even before the Straw Hats left the East Blue there had been instances where Luffy could’ve died and been fine with that because he was on his journey to achieving his ‘paradise’. (Example being Buggy at Loguetown)
Okay, now that that’s done! Back to the original question, how does all this relate back to a partner for Law? (Very loosely)
The Hero: The hero strives to meet their goal. They have an ambition that would pair well with Law’s own since he doesn’t strike me as the type to want to engage in a relationship with someone with essentially no aim in life.
The Innocent: The innocent uses the concept of safety to find their paradise. This safety could be applicable to others in the same space if it is physical safety, which would make this person sorta act as a ‘base’ for others to go to (does that make sense). This safety could also be of the mind, making this person even more of a safe space to go to in order to calm or nurture others.
The Jester: the jester enjoys the company of others because it’s how they connect to the world around them. This would make them click with anybody really, and it works for Law imo because this person could act as his way to connect with others whether that be through gossip or through casual talk with everyone together (does that make sense? Yk it’s giving class clown/popular x nerd to me LOL)
The Rebel: the Rebel doesn’t follow social norms, this works well for the captain of a pirate ship that’s from the Worst Generation to me lol. It also works because it’s no secret Law despises the World Government, and having someone who understands his sentiments better than most is a good bonding factor imo
The Explorer: the Explorer seeks adventure because it helps them find freedom, this type of person would work well with Law imo because the journey on the sea could act as their freedom. This freedom allows them to see the beauty and appeal of all things and help Law understand it too (ykwim? Like when you have someone who loves something so much they expose you to it and now they love it too? It’s kinda like that imo)

I hope I made that train of thought easy to follow, but the train did leave me behind at a couple stations
