— Hype Today Gone Tomorrow
This piece was created for a type based exhibition held in Sydney in 2011 called A Type Of Show. Curated by Luca Ionescu of Like Minded Studio the show featured work from contemporary artists and designers across the world and coincided with the Australian visits of design legend Tony DiSpigna, Alex Trochut and also featured work from the Australian typography legend Keith Morris. >>
The phrase Hype Today Gone Tomorrow is a comment on the rate at which trends and hype moves through the internet. Something can literally be the biggest thing in the world one second and then will be forgotten when the next hyped distraction appears for it's 5 Mb of fame. For this piece I wanted to create something type based that was semi sculptural, but also durable/ portable as I had to transport the artwork to Sydney. >>
I used a heavy weight serif as the base proportion for the type and then created the finished artwork in a vector form with ligatures, highlights and detailing. To realise the piece in 3D I worked with a plastics routing service using offcuts of materials to save on costs. With the vector file loaded into the machine's computer the clever robots did the rest. Once cut the black and transparent layers were then bonded with a clear glue. This submission was also reproduced as a limited edition A2 print, using foils and blind embossing. ∎
