Anakin and Slavery

I was going to write this as an answer but it got too long so I posted it here :)

Anakin´s identity as a slave wasn´t as focused as it could have been in the movies or cartoons but I think the fact Anakin/Vader was a slave from birth plays a big hand in how he relates to people around him, especially males with authority over him.

When he got back to Tatooine on Episode II and meet Watto there, he saw him strugling to repair a droid, the first thing Anakin does is help him repair the droid and that´s how Watto recognized him, he was there to ask about his Mother, he had reason to believe she was being beaten, yet his first action on seeing Watto is to help him do a chore, Watto was his slaver but also was the first male figure in his life and so he has authority in Anakin´s eyes, despite the damage he may be doing to his mother or the fact he could have made her and him explode with the push of a bottom when he was a child.

Watto tells him he sold Shmi, Anakin has no reaction, he shuts down emotionally, because is normal for a slave to be sold when they grow old, this would be unnaceptable for any free person but Anakin almost understands why Watto did it then he finds she was sold to a person that seemed to love her and that makes him feel better but there´s not a word of protest for Watto despite the fact Anakin is free and a Jedi now, Watto even congratulates him on becoming one.

So for Anakin/Vader there´s this mix of male person with authority who can do with you unspeakeable things but who also can be nice if you do what he needs you to do.

This separates him from Luke or even Rey as protagonist, because both have a healthy separation between authority and themselves, they are fiercely free because they know they can choose whatever they want because they are free, this isnt Anakin´s case, he didn´t process the change from being a slave to be a free person and this also translates badly in his relationship with Obi-Wan and the Jedi.

Obi-Wan is a father figure for Anakin, he loves him like one but also understands that for Obi-Wan recognizing him as a Son is unnaceptable, because Obi-Wan didn´t had a father, he had a master, for Obi-Wan that´s enough, not for Anakin, because he had a mother and would have liked to have a father, stil he saw him at least as an ally, not a slave master becaue Qui-Gon was an ally, he helped free him even if he could not do the same with his mother

This changed when Shmi died, his mother death cut a before and after in his relationship with the Jedi and Obi-Wan, he no longer trusts 100% in Obi-Wan´s counsel, the Jedi are not slave allies if they knowingly let a slave in slavery or to die.

So what does he do?, he does the same thing with no ally people, he hides the most precious aspects of himself, his family, because he´s afraid they are going to take them from him. He doesn´t tell them about his mother dying, he doesn´t tell them about his marriage, he doesn´t tell them about the tusken raiders yet he chooses to put himself in danger, bleed for them to help them in the clone wars, he´s repeating an old patron here, Padme is an ally, "Palpatine" is an ally, the Jedi, including Obi-Wan, are no longer allies, despite the fact he cares about their well being but as much as he cares, as much as he´s grateful for their training and the opportunities this brought, he´s also quite furious at them over his mother´s death, he doesn´t blame them for it but he can´t help but think about how they keep them separated while she was left in slavery.

While the Jedi are seeing Anakin´s reactions to them as if he was a rebellious youngster, Anakin in reality is just getting back to his slave mentality of pushing his boundaries without truly breaking master need of you, getting their approval is esential but they are not to be trusted. Anakin, even in the clone wars is always making himself useful, he doesn´t protest when he´s told to save the Son of the main master on Tatooine but this confirms to Anakin they care more about keeping a good relationship with Slavers than freeing the people oppresed under them.

I could go on but once he becomes Vader, this is exactly Palpatine´s relationship with him, unlike the Jedi, this was done on purporse by the Emperor, he wanted Vader to recognize him as his new master/father figure but he also made sure he didn´t have any conffidants besides himself, so he´s at once, master/father/ally.

Vader still hides things from him but he also knows he´s the only one who truly understands what´s is being a Sith and this dynamic is only broken with Luke´s intervention and yet Vader feels connected enough to the Emperor and responsible for his actions that he chooses to die alongside his master to give Luke and the galaxy a chance at freedom.

So yes, I definitely think Lucas introduced Anakin´s slave background on purporse and it´s something that follows his character all his life, after all, Vader is introduced as a Slave to the darkside and is treated like that by Luke in ROTJ, his "The Emperor has not taken all the good from you" is pretty direct in the kind of relatioship Luke recognized between The Emperor and Vader.
