"Profit and Lace" (S06E23, UNKNOWN) largely earns its reputation as one of the worst DS9 episodes. It suffers greatly from tone confusion, fighting between comedy & drama, never balancing. There is a nugget of a message and growth for Quark in there that can be mined, but it is buried pretty deep.

Whether you like it or not, the episode needed a poster to be a part of the series. I opted to ape the classic poster for Tootsie. I really could not think of anything else once I got that idea in my head.

Alright, other fans can say what they want but I LOVED that silly episode.

Say what you want but Quark is hot as a female (though Rom is more feminine than him). He's hotter when he French-kisses Nilva in front of a shocked Brunt.🥵🥵🥵

I understand Nilva when he wants to bone Quark.

Then the best: the end, when Odo appears out of the blue after the party like "I've heard you've been having sex with another man than me, you little traitor?" X)

And of course, the hug.🥰

Then Quark's family pops up: "I hope we're not interrupting?"

As a matter of fact, YES, YOU ARE! You scared off Odo, dammit. X)

Listen here, you immoral monster: Quark's outfit as Lumba was hideous and unflattering and I DEMAND to know why you didn't intervene and put together a better outfit for her and save the station some embarrassment! This insult to good taste shall not go unquestioned! And don't give me that 'it was short notice' nonsense, that outfit was so bad literally anything would have been an improvement. Your failing to intervene is a black stain upon the proud history of Cardassian fashion.

I agree that the outfit was in bad taste, but unfortunately, I was on Andoria that day for a fabric trade. When I returned and saw what they had put her in, I was quite appalled, and Doctor Bashir was the recipient of most of my complaints.

I purposely did not post about Profit and Lace for two reasons 1. Time crunch. Watched it before class and then got to class late enough as it was 2. What the heck do I even say to that?!?!?!

"Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" subversion with Quark/Lumba (Quark's female persona from "Profit and Lace")---and Lumba only being abhorrent from the POV of Ferengi male society.

So it starts as a weekend thing. Bashir does the surgery both ways, on request, every weekend, no questions asked. Quark tells himself it's just "exploring" at first, no biggie. But the truth his, Quark is happier as Lumba. "Quark" is a traditional Ferengi right down to the core, but there's always that pressure to suppress the other self...which is not so much an other self as...well

Lumba is a people person. She's fun, she dresses in pretty clothes, she gets attention. The Dabo girls like her a lot and she likes hanging out with them too. You could say she's not afraid to admit she likes root beer.

Rom thinks it's a big mystery at first--does his brother have a secret lady friend-business partner who's also a lot nicer and happier than him? But as soon as he catches on, he's immediately supportive, and ultimately helps "his brother" fake die (in dramatic fashion). Lumba lives her life 24/7.
