the lighting in iron lung is so special to me. simon is always lit overhead in the lung, and his face is always in shadow while his hair has a sort of halo. his personal identity doesnt matter either to eden or the coi, he is just their faceless saviour

whereas in his encounter with the light and elli, he is completely, yet dimly, illuminated. both of them see his humanity, but they struggle to identify aspects of his personal identity, the parts that define Him.

to the other characters, and by extension the audience, he is defined by his Lack of identity, and the reason why it is so jarring for us to learn about his history. we have also projected this blank slate onto him

i think the one important thing i picked up from iron lung that i havent seen anyone else talk abt is how he says 'i just want to live' as opposed to 'i dont wanna die'. obv someone more eloquent than me can put this better but hes making an active decision to Choose to live instead of passively Not wanting to die. a lot of horror does the 'i dont wanna die' bc at the end of the day (its night) and the audience Expects these characters to die. so the fact that simon says so clearly 'i just want to live' subverts the audience expectation and causes them to Also want him to live, hes been fighting so hard for it the whole time and hes even willing to destroy himself just to survive. he literally is just Some guy and no one deserves to be sacrificed in the name of advancement no matter what theyve done. and also his whole character arc is him finding opportunities to choose what he wants and gaining autonomy in spite of everything (they get their execution i get my freedom) instead of accepting everything he was dealt. and his Choice to want to live so badly. um i had a point somewhere. anyways 👍 iron lung is about choice and autonomy and mister pliers huge honkers

i love bloodymary so much and the concept of simon on the hail mary, but have we considered grace and rocky in the lung???

post canon where simon turns into a blood ocean fish, and grace and rocky somehow end up on at-5. so many possibilities... putting grace through The Horrors? sure! rocky grace save simon? even better. eva stratt and ava iron lung crossover? dont tempt me with a yuriful time. whatever u can think of i Promise u can use it somehow
