ooh awesome! according to wikipedia:

The Nisqually speak a subdialect of the southern dialect of Lushootseed (called Twulshootseed), which is a Coast Salish language. In Lushootseed, their name is dxʷsqʷaliʔabš, meaning "people of the grass."

and that isn't a phonetic transcription but rather the Lushootseed orthography, which was developed in the 1950s. here's how "sqʷɑliʔ wɑs̆ətəb sʔɑhidup" is written in the IPA. it makes sense that it looks so similar, cause the Lushootseed alphabet was was adapted from the IPA.

the word "geoduck" desperately needs a respelling and i like never advocate for that because spelling reforms are mostly dumb but like. i really like Lushootseed and all the Salish languages. they're super cool. and "geoduck" does not represent the native pronunciation or the anglicized pronunciation well at all.

the lushootseed word is literally "gʷidəq". that spelling is both the correct orthography and correct IPA for it. so, the final part: no notes i guess. 'duck' is a good way to anglicize "dəq". but "GEO?" for [ɡʷi]?? the closest interpretation of that as an orthography is as [ɡødək], which isn't correct. and a bit of a stretch imho. can we just spell it "guiduck"? "gweeduck"? "guidaq"? i don't want to be too prescriptivist up in here but ideally you'd also say it less like "goo-ey duck" and more like "gwee duck". i think goo-ey duck sounds comparatively silly. and people on the pacific coast should know more about salish languages, so. yeah man i wish it was called guiduck.

Lushootseed is a member of the Salish language family, whose approximately twenty surviving languages are spoken from northern Oregon to central British Columbia, Salish Language Map Map that shows the area where Salishan languages are spoken from the Pacific coast eastward into Montana and along the British Columbia-Alberta border.

The Lushootseed-speaking region extends along the shores of Puget Sound from modern-day Olympia to the Skagit watershed and from Hood canal to the Cascades. The Snohomish Lushootseed spoken at Tulalip exhibits features of both Northern and Southern language, though it is usually categorized as “Northern.”
