Wait did you identify as bi first too omg? I did identify as it in the beginning cuz i was like "im just as attracted to girls as to boys, i must be bisexual" but then i realised that the reason that i was equally attracted to all genders was because i wasn't attracted to any at all!! I hadn't even heard about asexuality before but then a girl told me about her being grace i was lik wtf is this and how can i relate so much to this?? I found a community that understood me and i felt so happy
Yup! I called myself bisexual for quite a few years. To be fair, when I was in high school, the general public was barely coming to terms with people being gay, let alone asexual. I lived in the middle of a bible belt and while there were a couple of gay kids in my school (there were probably more, but they would have been understandably closeted), it just. Wasn’t really talked about.
I honestly never considered that I might be asexual until about… three years ago? It never occurred to me, and I had a very different understanding at the time of what it meant. I think I may have been one of those people who figured asexuals were incapable of deeper emotion or companionship, idk. I was also put off from it for a few years after that because of… well. Let’s just say mainstream academic research into asexuality is questionable at best. It took me awhile to figure out that ‘asexual’ didn’t have to mean ‘incapable of romance.’ I write romance for a living, and I love it. Biromantic kind of came along later. I’m still not entirely sold on the split model of attraction and sometimes would rather just ID as asexual, but. For now it seems like the best descriptor for me so it works.
