The Whisperer in Darkness

For my art thesis I was charged with creating a body of work, hosting a show in one of the galleries on campus, documenting it and submitting a short thesis statement along with the documentation (images and photos). The title of my thesis was Fantastic Creatures and Lovecraftian Beasts and the work consisted of illustrations from Lovecraft's stories as well as creatures/monsters inspired by his writing, mythology and my own imagination.

Years later, when I began working with 3D renders I redid my illustration for The Whisperer in Darkness as a gift for my boyfriend.

Setup in DAZ Studio 3 Advanced. Rendered with LuxRender. Postwork in Photoshop Elements 8.0.

Here’s a test render for Astrid! No postwork, done in DAZ Studio>Reality>Luxrender, with one HDRI and one mesh light above the scene. Decided to stick with Reality, because I wasn’t happy with Iray’s results. Materials are easier to control in Reality, and it interprets light better in my opinion.

What I want to correct so far:

Lips are too shiny and a bit too dark (looks like she’s wearing lipstick).

Hair is too thin, shouldn't be that see-through.

HDRI picture resolution is too low, and lighting negates the shadows on the ground.

I miss Callad’s Reality light set, it’s not working anymore. Guess I should buy her new set and give it a try.

A quick experiment with LuxRender. And by quick experiment, I mean I set it up in ten minutes or so, and rendered it for ten hours or so.

Playing with HE_Mesh library #1

I got made the modeling data from one of examples of the library.

Then rendered it in Blender with LuxRender plugin.

So honestly, I’ve done nothing but stacking the pre-made bricks.

Nevertheless, I think the output is quite nice and I’m satisfied :)

Why does #Reality for #LuxRender make DAZ studio hair look like plastic? Shouldn't there be a shadow under her feet? Also, the eyes were bright gold/supposed to be bright gold and the color doesn't appear to be translating?
