(LYNESS)
Today's Flickr photo with the most hits: Lyness, Hoy, Orkney.
Lyness was the site of an immense naval base in WWI and WWII.
Now, there remain a scattering of abandoned buildings, a war cemetery & a small naval museum.
Today’s Flickr photo with the most hits: approaching Lyness from across Scapa Flow.
Prominent features - the WWI landing stage at left, with a scattering of buildings of similar vintage. At right, the WWII pier, more buildings, and the last remaining fuel oil storage tank. The Visitor Centre and Naval Museum is housed in these buildings.
The site has a few features that hark back to those moments of crisis in British history but most are now gone (which makes the remaining sites more valuable than ever).
It was here that the Grand Fleet (WWI) and the Home Fleet (WWII) were stationed. From this base they protected vital convoy routes, and responded to German naval threats.
Today's Flickr photo with the most hits: the 6" (150mm) deck gun from SMS Bremse of the Imperial German Navy, scuttled in Scapa Flow on June 21st, 1919.

Today’s photo with the most hits - taken at Lyness Naval Base, Hoy, Orkney. It’s a 6″ deck gun from SMS Bremse - one of the German ships scuttled in Scapa Flow in 1919.
