I think my all time favorite thing to draw was the cameo sequences. I wanted it to feel like those movie credits that would show the voice actors recording in the studio (Ice age, etc.)

Oh boy oh boy it's Soul Hunt episode 4 time and yes Rusty Courage has somehow encountered another way for her day to get even worse
We're running out of Souls in this Hunt and the boys are fighting—
[spoilers below cut, and yes this post is Long]
Firstly, a moment of appreciation for this episode's intro sequence. It would've been so easy to just start already over at the creeper farm, but the cinematic shots of 4C's house and the walk over to the water's edge are just... pleasant. Like it's the one relaxing walk that Rusty gets to have all session, before all the everything else happens.
I do enjoy Rusty and 4C goofing around while they were plotting to detonate the creeper farm. (The fact that 4C forgot to light up the platform above it got a good chuckle out of me.) It's a shame that the farm got overrun by Shadows before they could pull that off, but hey: more tnt for everyone! I see no way in which this could go wrong!
That falling creeper jumpscare in the woods was wild, and honestly, "scream and trip backwards into a river" is an appropriate response.
4C building a grave for Sinna was unexpectedly sweet, in a mournful sort of way. And it was nice that he encouraged Rusty to do the same thing for CC and Katie. He's right to point out that, while they're technically still here in a sense, they did still die, and something worth mourning was lost in the process.
Teaming up with the goat trio to go back and demolish the creeper farm felt like a tense heist moment— at least until Wade spotted them and stealth was discarded in favor of speed (and stabbing).
4C's escape tunnel architecture will not be dignified with a comment.
The conversation with Katie is... ominous. It's interesting to me that Shadow Katie still insists that she's "not like CC" and not going to kill her former ally, even though she's fully planning to kill people now, and doesn't intend to stop even if there is a risk of Rusty being caught in the crossfire.
Now. The argument between 4C and Jaw. There really are only two people Rusty can trust at this point and now they're at odds.
Like, in the context of everything we know about Jaw by the end of this episode, his line of logic here makes some amount of sense. If he's really as prone to paranoia as he seems to be, then this whole argument is basically just him having an emotional outburst. It's not even really about the axolotl or killing the goat trio; it's that Jaw feels like everybody is against him, and there is almost nothing 4C could possibly do to prove otherwise. And the one thing Jaw does think would prove otherwise is an inherently unreasonable request — I don't think Jaw even actually wants the goats to die, not once he's had a moment to calm down about it — so 4C will not do that.
4C is well within his rights to respond the way he does. There's very little I can say about his argument that he doesn't already say himself. 4C simply explains his grievances and leaves. In fact, the only thing he does in this entire argument that I wouldn't consider reasonable is the fact he draws a sword at the end, which definitely reads as an implied threat. (The action makes sense. 4C has been using implicit shows of force to protect himself this whole time. But it escalates the dispute with Jaw in a way that, while understandable, isn't necessary or reasonable.)
And I can only imagine it's distressing to be caught in the middle of that argument. Obviously, Jaw's being kind of... unstable... here (Wade lurking some distance behind and making dry comments is Not Helping), so for the most part, 4C is right. Where he stops being right comes later, when he explains the context of the dispute to Rusty, and it becomes apparent that 4C doesn't understand Jaw's motivations at all. 4C sees the inconsistency in Jaw's behavior as dishonesty rather than internal conflict, it seems, and that suspicion becomes very clear in the way he talks about the idea of Rusty continuing to remain allied with Jaw. (Once again: 4C being understandable, but incorrect.)
Rusty pivoting the conversation to mention Wade's "eliminate the goat trio" deal from last session, but never mentioning that "deal" was more of an extortionate death-threat, is interesting. Rusty then mentioning that the remaining Souls need to stick together, only for Ruby to immediately die somewhere far away in unknown circumstances, is honestly par for the course with Rusty's luck in this.
Actually running into Wade, and Wade subsequently hunting them both across the mountains, is horrifying in the best possible way. Like, really, hunting someone down while ominously singing?? The fact that, when 4C tries to redirect things into a social encounter, Wade opens with "Hello, I'm here to take away everything that everyone loves." ??? This guy is audibly smiling while being so incredibly sinister and that is so fun. 4C's response is actually, contextually, kind of impressive— Wade really does just roll up declaring he's going to hurt everyone and 4C's response is essentially "do you even know how to hurt me?"
(I am pleasantly surprised by Shadow Liam, in this moment, choosing to attack Wade to protect the remaining Souls. It's not the first time we've seen Shadow Liam, but it is interesting watching him be more proactive than the "sad ghost making mournful comments about the chaos" vibe we've seen of him prior to this point. Does he want to protect the Souls? Does he just not like how aggressive Wade is? Who knows, but the Souls sure as heck won't turn down another ally at this point, they're running out of those!)
I am also pleasantly surprised by the fact Rusty's tower ends up being the meeting place at which the Souls regroup. I can't say I ever expected it to be un-abandoned, but I'm glad to see it actually get some use. Also, all four of them standing at the top of the tower talking while Shadow Liam stands at the bottom of the tower, just within earshot, occasionally contributing responses from down on the ground is really funny and never stops being funny to imagine.
Now, I can't help but be fascinated by 4C getting himself blown up, because it really does feel like he got himself blown up. The fact that a trap had been set for him was so clearly indicated, there was no reason for him to try and speak with the Shadows regardless— at that point it feels like his death was either hubris or intentional, and for the sake of angst I'm tempted to assume the latter.
And with 4C gone, that means Rusty's stuck with just Nom and Shauna as the last remaining Souls! An unfortunate position. They'd obviously prioritize protecting each other over protecting Rusty, and that's even disregarding the fact that they've both been giving off untrustworthy vibes the whole time. And Nom keeps swinging devastating levels of casual sarcasm around. (The fact that he felt the need to list off every single ally Rusty had lost to her face had me almost mildly disappointed that he didn't hit a stalagmite when he jumped off the tower as a joke.)
It's an interesting time for the group to stumble into CC, that's for sure. After seeing so little of him in this episode, at least as far as aggression goes, I was really expecting his return to be... explosive. So it's interesting, to see that while Shadow CC still comes across as unsettling as ever, he's... seemingly gone back on his desire to get the whole alliance back together? Like, he never outright says this. And it's not like he's become suddenly sentimental. Shadow CC still doesn't seem to have much of an emotional range. Yet, when he calmly summarizes his outlook on the day's events, he's very bluntly talking about what Rusty should do to survive. And he openly admits he's been trying to interfere with attempts on her life. Which has me wondering: is it that he wants to protect her, or does he just not want one of the goat trio to win?
[Now: while I'm aware the conversation with CC is not where this episode ends, at this point I'm pretty sure Shadow Jaw's Almost 8-Minute Long Emotional Breakdown warrants its own post. Because oh boy do I have thoughts about his narrative as a whole, and episode 4 is the point where upon first watch I had to pause the video and state "Oh, I see, this isn't a redemption arc, this is a torment nexus". So, come back in... however long it takes me, for the inevitable "So something is Deeply Wrong with the Shadows (and Shadow Jaw fascinates me)" post I'll be writing after this one.]
