Here’s the NYTimes article from today. Notably:

Abrams praised “The Last Jedi” for being “full of surprises and subversion and all sorts of bold choices.”

“On the other hand,” he added, “it’s a bit of a meta approach to the story. I don’t think that people go to ‘Star Wars’ to be told, ‘This doesn’t matter.’”

But when it was announced that Abrams was indeed returning, his actors breathed sighs of relief. “I cried,” Ridley said, explaining that the director brought a comforting sense of structure and security. Boyega said he was glad that Abrams would get to finish the tale he’d begun in Episode VII. “Even as a normal person in the audience, I wanted to see where that story was going,” Boyega said.

There’s also an interview with John Boyega the other day, which is just paragraph after paragraph of how unhappy with TLJ he was, but especially:

However, the follow-up film The Last Jedi sidetracked that character progression, much to the chagrin of fans and Boyega himself. 

“The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid, The Last Jedi if I'm being honest I'd say that was feeling a bit iffy for me,” Boyega says. “I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that's something that spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.” 

and

Like many fans online, Boyega believes in the themes previously established within the Star Wars franchise, rather than the focus on the realism introduced in The Last Jedi, and would only return to the character if the future story encapsulated those classic characteristics. “The banter, the bickering, the undercover romances that then manifest an epic moment. That for me is Star Wars. It's not hyperreal or realistic or grounded. Don't do any of that. It's like connection, family, friendship. If they're going to do it in that direction, then absolutely.”

it took me an embarassing amont of time to realize they were meant to be emoticons lmao, i fucking hate them

i’ve been in my anime phase  and i might have used them at times which makes it worse

Right? I mean, I’m upset because Theron but also because it doesn’t even make any sense to me. Clearly betrayal isn’t an end for me, as evidenced by Quinn, but at least I could make sense of that. This is just??????? Who’s writing this shit anymore? I can’t think of a single thing they could do to make me play again because I have lost the last scrap of faith I had in their storytelling.
