An M249 and M240 setup in an original USGI M122A1 Tripod / soft mount setup.
While technically adopted in 1977 for coaxial tank gun purposes, the M240 really came into its role throughout the 1980's and 1990's. The crew served GPMG would become the standard use 7.62 machine gun in the US military. The Marines would eventually adopt the M240G to replace the aging M60 and M60E3, and the Army would adopt the M240B variant for infantry use shortly thereafter. The US Army is currently looking at converting the M240B and M240L that are currently in use into a 6.8 caliber.
