  Ever since the creation of twitter, facebook, tumblr, any social media site, people can easily get a message out. It’s not as constrained like it used to be in the years prior. We don’t have to send a letter to the editor, maybe not even get it printed, we don’t have to call into a radio station and hopefully get picked – No. All we need to do now is open up our laptops, go on twitter.com, and type out exactly how we’re feeling, where we are, and what we’re thinking.

  Anyone can be labeled a citizen journalist now, especially with the added bonus of camera phones. We can just take a picture of a car crash, for example, post it online with a brief comment and there we go. The same goes for social activism. If we feel constrained at any point, we can just type on twitter and get a huge following of people to respond in a matter of seconds that believe in the same thing. Social media brings everyone together and this is a way it does so.

  It’s because of these new opportunities that I’m on twitter, facebook, tumblr, instagram – just basically any social media site. I love having the freedom to say what I want without much constraint. I can tell the world why I’m mad, why I disagree with someone, what I think. It’s the freedom that encourages me to participate more directly in citizen journalism and social activism.

  An example of this is Tumblr. Tumblr is a huge way to promote social activism in the world. If someone feels constraint at all in their society, all they need to do is type up a post and tag in appropriately and a huge number of people will respond. It’s also pretty big in citizen journalism. People get out the stories that the news don’t (because they think it’s not important or because they want to hide it). No one gives a crap on the site about constraints of the media. We post what we want to post. We want to always get the message out to people and inform the society of tumblr what’s wrong and what’s going on in the world that they might not be being informed of.

  Twitter is also great in this aspect. It gets the news even before the news gets the news. You have to give the site credit in its popularity – especially since you can only use 140 characters. But news sometimes breaks on the website and it is like wild fire. Anyone can break the news on twitter and it’s why I think news outlets should look towards social media and get their stories off citizen journalists. It’s the easiest way to get breaking stories and disasters happening around the world.
