Because you’re completely empty inside….
prologue? maybe?
Logically Enjolras knew that he couldn’t carry the weight of the world; he knew he couldn’t possibly make every single wrong right, yet he tried. He tried his damn hardest with reckless abandon for his own health both physically and mentally. There were nights where he couldn’t bear to eat or sleep because he knew he had so much more to do, so many more letters to write, speeches to draft, signs to create, protests to plan. He loved the cause and he would fight to the death for his Patria and her people, but recently the consequences of his actions were starting to come crashing down on him.
The all-nighters started turning into weeks with no sleep, fueled by coffee, redbull and insmomnia. There were days when Combeferre had to remind him to eat at least one meal in fear that he’ll starve. Enjolras was aware of this; he was aware that he was starting to become a robot, a servant to the will of the people. He was more than aware that he didn’t get to stay updated with his friends, that he wasn’t truly living but merely existing. So when his friends introduced a new member to the group, he didn’t really notice up until said member had opened his mouth.
Nothing could ever describe just how horrible and enraged Enjolras had felt the moment the group’s new member—or more accurately, its new cynic—started mocking and deconstructing his arguments before he even got half-way through. What made him feel worse was the fact that his arguments were accurate and logical. Everything he said could be traced back to specific and reliant sources and it made Enjolras feel like ripping his hair out.
All of his work felt like it was for naught and half-assed. So he threw himself into everything all the more. He worked until he felt weary and drained down to his bones and he wouldn’t stop until he crashed.
He kept at this ridiculously unhealthy habit until one night at a Les Amis meeting when he simply couldn’t anymore. “Your cause is a waste of time,” he had said. “If you can’t convince one cynic then how in the world could you convince anyone else?” he had asked and Enjolras had had enough.
He wasn’t a quitter. He wasn’t going to give up on the cause, but he vowed that he would win Grantaire over. Somehow, someday.
