Just Between Lovers / Rain or Shine. 10
Story: 10
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10🔥
Comparable to: Come and Hug Me (kdrama); Chocolate (kdrama)
Hands down one of my favorite kdrama’s out there. I keep cursing at myself for not binging this sooner. I tend to put off watching those that I know I’m going to like only to save for later and instantly regret not doing it sooner. It’s definitely a tissue box warning drama though. I have no idea how many times I counted endlessly where my emotions were played like a roller coaster while watching. The storyline is way beyond realistic and raw where its executed in such an phenomenal way. From the writing, cinematography, the ost, and acting, everything is perfect. (omg the acting 🔥❤️👌) It’s like watching one gigantic movie all together I thought. If you love melodrama’s this should be on your list, some may have problems with the pacing I suppose (for me no problem whatsoever) but don’t let that deter you. If you do, you’ll be missing out on a terrific drama.
JBL Week Day 2: Favorite Relationship(s)
강두 + 마리 (Kang Doo and Madame Ma Ri)
JYT: Hey, just what exactly is that guy to you that you’re being like this? What’s so great about that jerk?!
MR: He saved my life.
To be honest, based on their initial exchanges, I was tempted to see Mari as another source of trouble in Kang Doo’s life, what with her enlisting his help with somewhat underhanded work and asking him to put up with harassment and physical abuse as part of the fallout.
I was wrong. This relationship is one more example of the deep but inscrutable bonds that Kang Doo has built by the simple magic of being himself. In episode 11, we find out that Kang Doo, at the tender age of 16 or so, protected Mari from being beaten to death in public while everyone else stood by and did nothing. We can only assume that thereafter she took him under her wing, helping him find work and taking care of him when he was at his lowest.
In episode 16, Mari is one of several characters who comes forward offering to donate her liver to Kang Doo. She turned a blind eye when her father passed away due to liver cancer, but for Kang Doo, she is willing to undergo the transplant operation. If that doesn’t say it all, I don’t know what does.
Mari herself is a wonderful character. She’s seen enough that she knows how the world works. She’s jaded but still oddly naive when it comes to romantic relationships, and here Kang Doo steps into the role of protector, looking out for her and reminding her of her own self-worth. She’s also dignified in a manner that’s hard to fully describe, but watching her, you can’t help but like and respect her.
Once again, I can’t say enough for this extended cast of characters. The show is based around the themes of trauma, healing, and remembering, with each character holding their own unique “scars,” and each is given room to live the fallout of those wounds in a realistic and thoughtful way. Kang Doo may have lost Halmeom, and while’s there’s no replacing her, I’m so glad he still has his noona.
The more time passes, the least I’m willing to give Just Between Lovers the befit of the doubt about Ma Ri’s romance with Yoo Taek. I mean, how are we supposed to accept him when he’s not growing in any way ?
He’s never comforted her in any way, only upset her, or made her feel worse when she was in pain.
He couldn’t apologize to her when he hurt her, instead using his money to force her to spend time with him. And he had the audacity to complain about his own inability to apologize !
He’s always mentioning Joo Won’s dad’s suicide with 0 tact and 0 respect. This time too, when he said “you’re not the only one who sacrificed” ... I wanted to hit him so bad.
Like, I see the parts of him that are supposed to make us care ... and they could have, because it does look like he really believes Joo Won’s father was at fault, and knows nothing. And his realistic outlook on life coupled with his more sensitive side could have been interesting.
But I can’t be bothered to care when he’s been an asshole to everyone so gratuitously.
