This morning I saw a dead possum on the side of the road while I was omw to school. It looked in tact so much that I thought it could have actually been playing dead.

On my way home I decided to pick him up, since he was definitely dead. I glanced at him and assumed his skull was all in tact and nice, so I grabbed my gear and took him home.

Well, first red flag was the fact that while I was at school he was ran over again and his guts were all out. I already took it this far, I said to myself.

When I got home to remove the rest of the organs, I made the realization that his little head was actually crushed and his skull was most definitely not in tact. (EDIT: after another look, his lower jaw looks pretty good! We'll have to wait and see how he turns out I guess!!!)

Welp, he's mine now, I guess. I put him in a little rotting cage and in a few weeks/months (?) We'll see how it goes. Im assuming his ribs are probably all broken because of the position he was in, but who knows I guess?

By the way, if you were wondering, I did not in fact take out the rest of his organs because I am a wimp and it was smelly.

Also, he did have worms, evidenced by them being all throughout his strewn out guts.

(I also don't really know his or her gender/sex because I could not bring myself to check...sorry bros)

Any suggestions on breaking down the fur and meat are greatly appreciated!

Wonky Foxy!

I finished up this red fox skull, which happened to be a bit wonky. I took him last year after a landowner had dispatched him. Didn’t look noticeably off from the outside, that is until after I had skinned him out. I then realized that his eyes didn’t quite line up together. And now that the skull is complete, I can see that 1) his teeth don’t quite come together perfectly and are misaligned, 2) he appears to have a little damage or deformation under the eye on one side, 3) his eyes are off center as well, and 4) he also has a deviated septum, so his nasal cavity is crooked. He hardly looks “normal” when you look at him from every angle. I tried to include as many pics to show how “off” this skull actually is. The last pic is before maceration, and you can see what I noticed with the eyes.

When you tell someone about degreasing skulls and they’re wondering “do I really have to do all of that?”, show them this. 😄

There now, at least his skull is finished. This is our Pretzels kitty, who passed away last year. I personally processed him after a few months of his passing, but I think I can safely say that I will likely never process another of my own pets. It was difficult to do, even though I’d given it time. Grief is a strange thing.
