My Trip to Peru. November 2014.
The equally fun and challenging trip to Peru with Deakin Uni and Challenges Abroad to do the Machu Picchu Challenge. Involved volunteering in and around Cusco and the Sacred Valley.
My group volunteered at a primary school teaching art classes to the school in the morning, and English lessons to the grade 6s in the afternoon, with lots of volleyball and soccer in between and afterwards. We were also the first group to ever teach English to these students, which proved quite difficult considering our Spanish wasn’t exactly fluent! We all got pretty damn good at charades though, and the kids learnt a lot! We also all helped one of the other groups at El Girasol orphanage for the day, doing some refurbishment. I helped out with painting the girls dormitory, whilst others fixed a hole in the roof, repaired some wardrobes or got muddy to help build an adobe oven.
We finished off our trip with the 5 day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu, which was definitely far from easy, but definitely worth the experience!
