You can acquire a legal copy of Pages, Numbers and Keynote for free by downloading the trial version of iWorks '09 (the name given to the whole suite) version of the software, agreeing to the trial license and then updating it to the newest version through the app store.

The newest versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote don't have trial versions and by downloading over the top of the old versions there is no way to enforce the original trial license.

Yes, this does work. I have been using the newest versions for over 9 months now and never have any problems with updates or licensing.
