Foxglove is a wildflower & it’s botanical name is Digitalis purpurea. They are commonly also known as Goblin’s Glove & Fairy Fingers. The name Digitalis comes from the word finger or digit because of the thimble-like shaped flowers.

Foxglove plant takes 2 years to mature. The plants leaves, stems & roots grow to form a rosette the 1st year. In the 2nd year it will grow tall spikes on which the flowers & seeds will grow. It is a plant that grows well in shady gardens. They are available in several colors. The rose or pink are hybrids & they grow much taller. It comes in a creamy white, a pure white, lavender & white bloom marked with maroon or raspberry colored centre. It comes in yellow with lighter yellow marking.

This plant is a favourite of bumble bees. In history Foxglove was used medicinally to cure heart problems & dropsy a serious 18th c. disease.
