OWC Thunderbolt Dock for New Macs and Many Windows PCs – Missing Ports Restored, and Then Some
No one asked if I care that laptop computer makers have removed DVD/CD drives, Ethernet ports, HDMI ports and the multiplicity of USB-A and SD card ports on laptops. Well, I did notice and I do care. But, time marches on and new technology offers improvements worthy of changes. Once we accept the changes, we usually benefit from them.
Manufacturers often listen to their audiences. Consumer…

Woodstock, IL – March 13, 2018 – OWC®, a leading zero emissions is making drive juggling a thing of the past with the new OWC Mercury Elite Pro Quad. The new external storage solution offers four drive bays to provide massive amounts of storage from a single USB–C™connection, with the flexibility to be utilized in Mac, PC and mixed Mac/PC environments. Designed for users who require high capacity storage with fast transfer speeds, the Mercury Elite Pro Quad is ideal for use by post– production firms, photographers, creative agencies, higher education programs, and small businesses.
Key Features
Four SATA drive bays support up to 48TB of storage in a desktop solution
Up to 947MB/s of USB 3.1 Gen 2 performance
Equipped with the SoftRAID engine
RAID Ready or RAID Edition (Mac only)
Drives included – 3 year OWC limited warranty

The Mercury Elite Pro Quad’s USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface and USB–C port work universally with any USB–C or Thunderbolt 3 equipped Mac or Windows
PC. And the included USB–C to USB–A adapter cable provides the ability to connect to any USB equipped computer. The heat–dissipating aluminum enclosure, whisper–quiet fan and vibration–absorbing feet keep the unit running reliably cool and quiet.
OWC recognizes that not everyone needs every single RAID mode, and has added the option for users to choose what works best for their individual workflow. It is available in two versions of the SoftRAID engine for Mac users, one with RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes along with disk certification and drive monitoring, and one with support for RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 4, RAID 5, and RAID 1+0. Windows users can create simple (striped), two–way mirrored, or parity storage spaces directly in Windows 7, 8, or 10.
The Mercury Elite Pro Quad 4–bay external storage device is now available at
Upgraded a friends laptop to a larger SSD. Got to keep the old SSD, so I put it in a carrier to use as an external.
As I am a picky guy, I had to run BMD Disk Speed Test. Just to know how fast the Apple SSD is in OWC’s carrier.
But which format should I use?
First I tried ExFat. That is the top result.
Then I tried HFS journaled. Which is the second result.
Seeing as I may end up using this drive to transfer files to a Linux or Windows machine at some point, and speed being a hair faster on write I am going with ExFat.
But I had to do one more test. HFS Journaled Encrypted.
Wow, that returned a speed of 140MB/s write and 350MB/s read.
Abysmal!
This is a tough call for those of us that are concerned with electronic privacy. The accepted wisdom is to just go ahead and encrypt your system drive, and any external drive that you can easily be separated from. Especially if you store financial or other private data.
There is not supposed to be any performance penalty. I’ve heard that repeated by a lot of people in Tech and IT.
If you also do demanding creative work or development work this is a bitter pill to swallow.
All that encryption achieves is to prevent the drive from being browsable by someone who has physical access to it. For example, a Mac laptop gets stolen, and the thief mounts it in target disk mode (hold down T on startup).
If it is encrypted he would need to furnish a password to unlock the drive. So we have prevented him from getting to your tax return PDFs and unsecured excel file of all your passwords.
Does nothing to prevent a hacker or malware from browsing the contents of the drive when you are logged in and connected to a network!
So do not dismiss the importance of strong passwords, and turning off most of the ‘sharing’ features of your host OS.
Encryption won’t help you, and me, I’m not doing it.
