Insanity pls

While Hashirama had seen his fair share of death, it was not until he was made clan leader at the age of fifteen that he witnessed the true extent of mental illness within the shinobi population. The Uchiha made it a point to ruin the minds of those they could not kill, utilizing the genjutsu of their Sharingan, and a particularly high ranking member (his name was Hikaku, third in command) had the innate ability to reach a victim's conscious with a mere glance, tap into their fears, and shatter their sanity. It appeared particularly strenuous on his own body and mind, and thus used rarely; but the victims never retained a semblance of normalcy and were executed.

Hashirama protested.

The clan elders believed those who were severely affected by any mental illness were insane and a burden to those who would have to provide for them. While food was certainly not to be wasted, the patients were also unable to wield a weapon and an easy target for the enemy. Easy targets could babble nonsense and let secrets loose.

Most men who suffered mental illnesses either endured in silence, for fear of being put to death, or confessed openly, begging for the mercy of release from their reality. Hashirama urged for neither: If people could openly seek help, and be willing to obtain said help, he would be able to treat the problems. His specialties were in physical ailments, but he was willing to learn.

The struggle was unrelenting, but he convinced them that the more people he could help, the larger their numbers and the greater their chance of survival as a clan. Eventually, they gave in. People slowly began asking for his help, and he did indeed find ways to ease the sufferings of depression, paranoia, insomnia, PTSD, and many other issues. He never, however, discovered how to put back the pieces of a mind destroyed by Hikaku's ocular abilities.
