Johto League, Episode 14 - Big Crisis! Sprout Tower!

After spending so much time on Route 29, Ash crosses Routes 30 and 31 in record time. He arrives in Violet City, eager to challenge his first Johto Gym.

Before he can reach the Gym, Ash gets sidetracked by the Pokemon School in the center of town. This is where new players can get a brief tutorial on the various elements of gameplay. Ash doesn't need the primer, but Brock wants to flirt with the teacher so we wind up stopping here anyway.

This is basically a rehash of a similar Kanto episode. But instead of a Meowth, the unpleasable kid Sho/Zackie wants Ash's Pikachu instead. He swipes a Poke Ball from Ash to try and capture Pikachu. Good luck there; Pikachu won't even let Ash keep him in a Ball. But instead, Zackie gets a Bellsprout for his first Pokemon.

As a Starter, Bellsprout's not a bad get. Zackie's probably too young and green to have access to TMs, and some Pokemon are basically useless until they hit a certain level. However, Bellsprout has Vine Whip from level 1. They're slow and fragile, but those Vine Whips are okay for a first attack; At the very least, they make it feasible for Zackie to catch some more Pokemon. And once they hit level 15, they can add Sleep Powder to their repertoire.

Ash returns to Violet City just in time to find the Rockets trying to SAW THROUGH THE SWAYING CENTRAL SUPPORT BEAM OF SPROUT TOWER, OH MY GOD. STOP THEM. THAT IS A HOLY PLACE. HOW DARE YOU.

Zackie's new Bellsprout comes through and thwarts the Rockets, but they are unable to stop the support beam from being split clean through. For some reason, this is still treated as a victory, even though the constantly swaying support beam is now structurally unstable (and also that might be a living Bellsprout they just bisected).

It's a questionably happy ending, but at least Zackie comes to appreciate Bellsprout for his very first Pokemon.
