My clothes are all white. Once I get some blood on it from the battlefield, wouldn't I look more like crane?
I wanted to be as Tsuruichipilled as possible because of the instrumental PB made that included both of them. While they are instrumentals and I can only be delusional in guessing what they mean, I find it a little suspicious that PB included both melodies for Ichigo’s Shuuen no Solitude AND Tsurumaru’s Sora no Kanade in Daregatame ni Inochi Sasageshi. However, upon translating these lyrics I came to the conclusion that Tsurumaru doesn’t seem like he’s talking to another sword in specific. Again, I want to point out that the generalized pronoun “you” is used often and can allude to the Saniwa, the listener, too.
Other than the obvious feeling of Tsurumaru pulling the listener into his world of surprises, I also feel as if the lyrics are pretty introspective about his own being. Like he’s talking to and reassuring himself. Lines like “No one understands me, so I just hang my head / but still, I have the desire to hope for tomorrow,” and “I feel like I'm getting lost, even if I get used to giving up / the wind still blows” display that one obstacle is not enough to stop our very own surprise seeker.
Historically, the Tsurumaru Kuninaga sword has been desired by many. Being forged by Gojou Kuninaga, a rumored student of Sanjou Munechika, the Tsurumaru blade was crafted with the Mikazuki Munechika blade as a reference. The sword has been kept in pristine condition despite his turbulent history. Once owned by the Adachi clan, he was stolen from the grave by the Hojo clan. Then, after the Hojo clan was ended by the Ashikaga, Tsurumaru fell into unknown hands. That was until good ol’ Oda Nobunaga got him, to which Nobunaga gave it to Mori Yoshinari of the Mori clan.
After the Mori clan, Tsurumaru was basically passed around like a dream blunt rotation until he was placed in a shrine.
To which he was taken by the Honami clan, given to the Date clan, then presented to the Meiji Emperor’s Imperial Collection alongside Ichigo Hitofuri, Uguisumaru, and Hirano Toushirou.
His history, in my opinion, seemed quite exciting. However, his character in-game expresses distaste for being desired to the point where people were grave robbing and shrine stealing just to get their hands on him. That’s where I draw my conclusions of why he craves a surprise. Yes, his longevity is one of the factors, but I think the fact that he’s been from one owner to another has engraved in his mind the desire for something new, the refusal to settle down, his excitement to be stained in blood in the battlefield to look more like a crane.
Sora no Kanade is about being true to yourself. This includes Tsurumaru being true to himself and bringing you along with him; “Let me erase your boring memories // You’ll always be fine just the way you are // live in the moment.”
“The sky looks like it's about to cry // there’s a gap in the clouds where the light shines” is one of my favorite lyrics in this song. Mostly because the rain/stormy weather can represent negative emotions or memories, but there’s a silver lining to living through that, and it is being able to see the next day and make the next positive memory. A lot of the lyrics are a push to your realization that you can do more than what you think. The sky is your canvas, paint it as you choose.
Thank you for listening!
